'The Thrill Is Gone'

I have a few dedicated readers that send me direct messages on Twitter. Quite often, those messages are of awesome video clips they've found. Today I present on of those clips: Slash with B.B. King doing "The Thrill Is Gone." Just some awesome music for your Saturday. I never got to see B.B. King live, which is such a shame. A genius.

B.B. King - Ultimate Collection

My wife and I saw B.B. King in about 1998. It was on an outdoor triple bill with magic Dick and Jimmy Vaughan as openers. Here is the main thing I remember about that night. for those of you who have seen true blues legends in concert, you'll know what I mean by this. Their shows always start with their band playing one or two tunes by themselves. so, the music starts and the second guitar player takes a solo. Since I can't see, my wife, being the amazingly helpful person she always is, whispers to me, "That's not B.B. King." I politely whisper back, "I know. Believe me, when he plays his first note, I'll know." So, sure enough, a couple minutes later, I hear the fullest, richest guitar note; just oozing with feeling, and unmistakable timbre. My wife, now understanding what I met, simply sheepishly whispers to me, "Uh...that's...uh...B.B. King." Great stuff!

I also had a chance to see King later in his career. Yes, he wasn't very mobile (sat on a chair most of the show). Yes, he was playing tunes he played for years and seemed to have a fairly well-rehearsed show. But--DAMN--that man moved me!

I don't care what your pleasure is when it comes to music. Hearing a legend like King is a rare treat that one never forgets. And I came to this show with a rudimentary knowledge of his catalog, as a last minute replacement "guest " of a friend who had an extra ticket. I count myself lucky that I got to cross something off my bucket list that I didn't even know was on it.

[I'd throw in a jab at Bonamassa, but I don't feel like he is worthy of standing or sitting alongside King . . . oh wait, I guess that is a jab. So be it.]
