Call for 80s Metal Cover Bands

Want to be on television? Have a cover band? I received the press release below a few hours ago. I guess this means we'll be hearing some good Glam metal on T.V. soon. Or, at least, I hope.

JANUARY 11, 2011 - TriStar Entertainment is conducting an open casting call and looking for twelve enthusiastic cover and tribute bands for a Tribute/Cover Band reality television show. We are scouring the globe in search of the best cover and tribute bands dedicated to the 80's rock/metal scene. To be considered, please email a press kit that includes a bio, band photo, along with links to music and videos.

In addition to bands, we are also casting for three hosts, male and female. We are looking for someone who isn’t shy on camera and can talk about all things 80’s. Please send a bio, photos, videos, portfolio to the email below for consideration.

Please email or go online for more info

I think I would be a great host but as my wife pointed out they are probably looking for someone younger and far better looking then myself.

I am going to encourage the Detroit band ROCKSTAR to send in their information. They are a talented group of musicians who cover everything metal/80's and they regularly pack the clubs around here.

Hahaha!!!, Christian!

I hope you are being facetious! Unless you enjoy incoherent trainwrecks happening right before your eyes on television, you might want to rethink your vote!

Funny thing is, I was gonna tell both you and Allyson that you guys should be the hosts!

Actually, I assume the hosts should be judges and this show a battle of the Tribute Bands.

You guyz know your stuff, at least the kind of stuff they are inevitably going to cover on the show (hahaha!!!) and you can speak about it much more coherently than I.

But if what you want is insane ranting about and blasting of the poor contestants, I'm your man.

Seriously, though, I think this show could be really captivating provided they're able to (1) Pull it off (2) Get the top Tribute Bands and (3) Get the right hosts (read "judges").

Given the amount of Tribute Bands dedicated to one particular Band, they could even do a "Led Zeppelin" night, "AC/DC" night, "Van Halen" night, "Journey night or a "Bon Jovi" night because in those cases, that would be comparing "Apples" to "Apples".

What they will probably do in a one hour episode is pit a "Led Zeppelin" tribute band against the same of a "Bon Jovi" or an "AC/DC" or a "Neil Diamond", for that matter. Which is comparing "Apples" to "Oranges" but could still work.

Of course, as Kari points out, there are the Tributes who can play it all, not just one band's music. And that's another way to approach it. I actually think you could have both kinds of bands compete on one show.

Another way to approach it is to have the Tributes who play it all compete on songs by one band per show. That way, they can set it up in a similar format to all of the "Reality Talent Shows", where they can survive rounds of elimination week to week

I for one will be watching, rather than ever even fathoming being a judge.

It would be awesome to actually have a rotating roster of judges to fit the tribute bands being featured on any particular night, where at least one of the judges could be a member of the band or bands being featured.

Wouldn't it be cool to have Jimmy Page on to judge the "Lez Zeppelins" or "Get The Led Outs" of the world. Okay, I guess I'm dreamin' there. How about Coverdale, who's an expert aper of Zep with Whitesnake?

Or, at the very least, people like Steven Tyler (Aerosmith -- I know, he's with AI, but I said "like" Tyler) or Rick Nielsen (Cheap Trick), who know a little bit about knicking other peoples music, mainly The Beatles. Another person who would be an excellent judge is Ozzy Osbourne, not only for his extensive knowledge because of his experience with Black Sabbath and from all of the Ozzfests and endless tours he has personally embarked on through the decades, but because he is an absolute authority on, yep, The Beatles.

I like the idea of the recruitment of "experts" from all over the spectrum and not necessarily in the celebrity mold but I tend to think, obviously for ratings, they maybe have a mix.

Like, say, Allyson, Rick Nielsen, Christian, Sarah Palin (a self-avowed Van Halenite -- Hey, one good thing about her! I found it!), Rock Talent Show Veteran Judge Tommy Lee and Steven Colbert.

If they wanted to do the rotating "host/judge" approach, how about other notable "experts" who might not necessarily come to mind like Conan O'Brien, Adam Sandler or Mark Walberg and others who share our love for this music and have the ability to sing and/or play it.

Though, I'm not able to shut up in the comments sections of Allyson's, your's, or anyone else's posts on BBG!, put me in front of a camera, and I'm like a dear in the headlights. Plus I don't pretend to know even a thimbleful about music compared to you guys -- at least the music we're all familiar with.

I might know a little something about bands you've never heard of, but that's only because I have the CDs. As far as understanding, say, Accept or Aerosmith, and the ability to articulate it, you guys have me in spades.

I sure hope they get this show off the ground. Right now, looking at the press release and the "Call for Talent" site, it looks like it's still in the Pilot Development stage.

Christian, I appreciate the shout out, but, surely, you jest.

p.s. Spence makes a great point! Why the h*ll don't they have a showcase of real rock bands on TV? I wish VH1 Classic would up the budget on "That Metal Show" and expand it to an hour to let the artists who come on play a couple of songs live, as they had done on the episode featuring "Anvil". Instead of having George Lynch or Tracii Guns up in the rafters of the nose bleed section cranking leads for the intro's and outro's of commercial breaks (which is still really cool), why not let them air it out with their bands? It only helps the artists who would play get more exposure and their record companies sell more albums and would certainly enhance advertiser interest and sales of commercial time. Just imagine Halford or Priest or Crue or Sixx A.M. or a Dokken reunion live on that show? I actually think Trunk and Co. have been bucking for this for some time and having the weekly guest guitar hero was the compromise. But VH1 Classic ought to try it. To me, it seems like a pretty calculated risk. The show already has a core audience and it would expand with the addition of live performances as more people would make sure to tune in. And the results would be... Memorably Stunning! VH1 Classic could also expand Metalmania by bringing it back to a hosted show with the occasional special guests and live performances. Or how about a show like Jules Holland or stuff like that but Rock and Roll like Spence suggests or better yet, pure METAL!
