Hurtsmile Debut Video for 'Just War Theory'
Saturday, February 26, 2011 at 12:01AM The other day I spoke with Gary Cherone about his new project Hurtsmile. I knew I had to write the video premiere for Noisecreep earlier this week and I wanted to post here as well. I really like the song and the video is cool.
Gary told me how the band ended up choosing "Just War Theory" as their first single, saying "Usually there are two or three songs that rise above the other ones, and 'Just War Theory' is one of them. A first video ... you wouldn't pick something slow or mid-tempo so you rule those out. It's as good as two or three other tracks. It represents the band. [It is] pretty aggressive, very rock 'n' roll and has a good lead in it. We just wanna make a splash with this first video."
If you are attending M3 Rock Fest in Maryland this May then you probably know Hurtsmile is on the bill. I asked Gary what time his band would play the side stage and he wasn't sure. He told me they were told they didn't need lights, so they will definitely be during the day. I'm really looking forward to their set.

But I will say, I feel this is the best thing he's ever done. It's better than Extreme who, I'm sorry, were, are and always be completely barfilicious, IMHO.
It's kind of a shame, really. Great Vox but lousy songwriting.
Here, not so bad, as the song actually ROCKS, something Extreme failed to do even with chopmeister, Nuno shreddin' the frets. I kinda knew these guyz a little bit cuz my chick at the time dated Bettencourt before that.
Probably hung out with 'em around half a dozen times after their shows at The Cat Club or when we were watchin' other bands there. Boring dudes, gotta say.
I never told Nuno, but I always thought he shoulda split and formed another band. I always thought he hitched himself to the wrong "star".
But, hey, I know Cherone has a strong following, especially among certain factions of musicians and fans who unknowingly substitute artless technicality above catchiness and REAL songwriting ability.
Still, like I said, this is the best thing Cherone's ever done so it just proves the old adage, "It's never too late".
There's never been any doubt in my mind that he had the chops, but I always thought he looked like Dee Snyder's little brother. At least Snyder was smart enuff to wear make-up, well, most of the time, at any rate.
Hey, look, I'm no dummy. If you met me, you'd probably say I should probably be wearin' Kiss make-up, too!)
I even like how he apes Johnny Rotten's phrasing. Now that's Rock'n'Roll.
And the sunglasses definitely help.
So, when all is said and done, I LIKE IT!
And you gotta hand it to him, at least he knows not to crap around with a semi-scab version of Extreme or whatever and move on.
Other legacy patched-up semi-scab outfits (you know who you are) should take note.
I give him kudos.
Though I may knock all of his past endeavors and limited talent, there's no taking away his ability to sing.
Like I said, I think this is the best thing he's ever done.
We'll just have to agree to disagree on Extreme, Metalboy. Pornograffiti was like manna from heaven to me back in the early 90's, what with the jazzed-up pop-metal of "Get the Funk Out" and perfect r-n-r strut of "He-Man Woman Hater". The lyrics were nothing to be proud of, but then a Glam Metal poetry reading would be good for guffaws and little else, whether Extreme was on the bill or not.
Nuno has had more than his share of post-Extreme acts, at least 5 that I've counted, and I'm not including backing up Rihanna on that score (ouch). While all have been listenable, none of them have measured up to Extreme's first 3 albums.
