Cheap Trick Debut 'The Summer Looks Good On You'

Just in time for their tour with Poison, Cheap Trick has dropped a new song. Called “The Summer Looks Good On You," it's an upbeat, fun track. This song is from an upcoming album, due later this year.

Surrender it is not. Had great vibes for first minute of the tune. Just seems Robins vocals are a bit restrained. Look forward to hearing it though this SUMMER!!!! Can’t come soon enough here in Northeast.

Man these guys just continue to crank out catchy, hook laden stuff. Love it.
@Kixchix Amen on the SUMMER! What a shitty "spring" (and I use that term very loosely) yet again here in the Northeast. Cold and rainy should be the name of a law firm here... lol

I like it. And, while I was never a huge fan of CT, it was mb!'s constant relentlessness about this band that made me reacquaint myself with them and downloaded mb!'s suggestions from ITunes. I now play them on a semi-regular basis.

After saying that, one thing that I've said for years is that the album title and label, "Authorized Greatest Hits" mimicking the 'logotype' "Warning Parental Advisory" is one of the cleverest names to don an album jacket. Damn, I wish I could come up with something that brilliant.

Hmmm ... Well, I really want to like this but I’m with Kixchix COMPLETELY on this. It starts out great but then seems to go a little sideways, particularly Zander’s vocals, though I would add Nielsen’s guitar, as well.

And I’d like to take it a step even further, if I may, Kixchix. You’re not kidding when you say this ain’t no “Surrender” because I actually believe this deserves to be thrown on top of the massive pile of mediocre songs from such albums as “Special One”, “Rockford”, “The Latest” (the exception being their KILLER cover of Slade’s “When The Lights Go Out”) and “Bang, Zoom, Crazy ... Hello”.

Nearly every song on those albums have one thing in common — they are hindered by unfocused songwriting and overall lack of musical structure. Like those songs, the lyrics and music of “The Summer Looks Good On You” returns to the world of mixed metaphors and confused riffs and hooks so much of their output has suffered from over the last couple of decades, unable to tap into the clever creativity that generated so many Powerpop and Hard Rock classics Cheap Trick was once known for.

Yet, they finally proved they still have it in them last year and 19 albums later, fresh off their induction into “The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame” with their incredible comeback album, “We’re All Alright!”. That album contains material that’s the closest thing they’ve come to the quality of “In Color” or “Heaven Tonight”, certainly better than any of their near misses I previously mentioned while also including all their consistently inconsistent output since “All Shook Up”.

So, as I said, I REALLY want to like this, too, Gary, especially when you consider Cheap Trick is pretty much my favorite band after Led Zeppelin, almost solely based on the excellence of their first 3 albums alone. But, unfortunately, to once again paraphrase Kixchix, this ain’t no “Surrender”, not even close.

this is the type of song that, if I still lived in the Northeast, would get me really pumped for the warm weather of Summer. For me, especially in the 80s, Cheap Trick was practically synonymous with Summer because I saw them every Summer at Great Adventure for about seven years straight. Never played the same setlist twice. To my Northeastern BBG friends I say, hang in there, warm weather is coming, and rock the F on!
