'Tom Petty: Heartbreakers Beach Party' Streaming Now

Tom Petty: Heartbreakers Beach Party marks Cameron Crowe's directorial debut. The 80s film is now available for streaming on Paramount+. I must admit I have never seen this film. This isn't a surprise I suppose since the piece debuted on MTV in February 1983. Considering I was a toddler at the time, I wasn't exactly the target audience. Not that my parents had cable then anyway.

The film chronicles Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers as they released the Long After Dark album. This updated film version also includes some never-before-seen Petty footage.

So I Saw Steely Dead Live

I went to Oahu for vacation. When Eric and I were leaving Duke's (his favorite), I spied a poster from the corner of my eye that looked like the Steely Dan logo. Upon inspection the poster said Steely Dead... and was promoting two shows that same night! I literally jumped up and down and immediately bought tickets to the late performance.

I wasn't exactly sure what to expect and I will admit the show was a little odd. Basically the band rotated between Dead and Dan pretty consistently and then would meld up the songs to close out each little vignette. This was cool because I honestly never would have put the two bands together. I also loved that the set was made up heavily of deep tracks.

I guess the most surprising to me was the crowd. Everyone had on their tie-dye, so cool. It was clear these folks were Dead Heads, also cool. I just didn't expect the nonstop dancing like what happens at an actual Dead / Dead and Co. show. Like, we were in the Blue Note jazz club with assigned seating but no matter! Dancing everywhere! And all that dancing meant thirsty folks, so the patrons were just going to the waiter stand and helping themselves to glasses, ice and water. I've never seen that before.

Some of the songs we got included "Bodhisattva" (SD), "Loser" (Jerry Garcia) and "Showbiz Kids" (SD). Steely Dead is coming to Columbus, Ohio next month and I might try to convince Eric to see them again, just to see if I can get a set with the Dan's "Caves of Altamira" in it. Steely Dead do that song from my beloved The Royal Scam album but it wasn't on offer for me in paradise last weekend.

As a side note, The Blue Note Hawaii is a super cute club, right on the Waikiki strip (Moana Surfrider area). We spent most of our holiday away from the madness but always like to add a couple "city" days to our Oahu trips. I would recommend the Blue Note. That said, the show certainly wasn't free or even cheap. But that's Hawaii for you.

DAZR - The Modern White Lion?

Dazr is a newish band from South Carolina. The name got me at first - I assumed European not American! Dazr just released a video for their song "Can't Take It Anymore" and I can't express to you how much of a White Lion vibe I got from both the track and vid. We're talking straight up 1988 MTV folks. The song is on the band's self-titled EP, available via streaming or CD. These guys would totally fit M3 Rock Festival.

The full album is below via Spotify as well.

Sad Update - 80s Cruise

An update to the story of Taime Downe's fiancee Kimberly Burch going overboard during The 80s Cruise. The two were on the cruise because Faster Pussycat was one of the scheduled acts. We now know there is security video showing Burch intentionally jumping overboard. It happened in front of Taime. This news came from a frustrated Riki Rachtman who vented on social media last night. Riki and Taime have been friends for decades.

Obviously the story is horrific and it just seems like every new detail makes it worse. As a result of the video evidence, Taime was cleared of any wrongdoing or connection to Burch's death.

(Video is not in story below).

Socks Go Missing! Vases Fall!

How did I ever get by without this account? Thank you Cikindeles for making me laugh.

I came across this black metal cat-themed song late last night and couldn't stop laughing. I mean, the reel even stopped my doomscrolling for awhile.

If you would rather watch via YouTube, I got you:

'Dust In The Wind' - Corey Taylor x Bad Omens Cover

Ok this is excellent. I was on vacation last week so I am still catching up on literally everything. One of the songs that came out while I was away and/or sleeping off jet lag was a great cover of the Kansas classic "Dust in the Wind."

The song is from the movie Queen of the Ring, in theaters tomorrow. Corey Taylor (Slipknot fame) and Bad Omens team up for this performance and I like it a lot. Everyone knows I love Bad Omens, so adding this to my playlist was a no brainer.

Motley Crue Residency Dates Moved

Vince Neil needs a medical procedure. Because of this, Motley Crue's Las Vegas residency will now start in September instead of later this month. That doesn't give folks who already bought flights and hotels much time to change things around, but it is what it is I guess.

The residency will take place at Dolby Live Park MGM. New show dates are listed below.
