The Last Day of 2009

For me, 2009 sucked in a lot of ways and I'm glad this year is just about over. I'm hitting the road early and heading to Nashville to ring in 2010 with my husband at the Hard Rock Cafe. Apparently there's a street party or something. The real reason we're going south is to see Lynam and Sevendust Friday night in Birmingham, Alabama. I'm interviewing Sevendust before the show but I'm most excited to see my Lynam boys again.

With that, I'm out. I'll leave you with this: Aerosmith doing "Rats in the Cellar" live on New Year's Eve back in 1984.

Do Rockstars Still Exist?

Maybe it's a sign of my age. Or cynicism. Or chosen career path. Whatever the case, I'm feeling like rockstars don't exist anymore. Note: when I say rockstar, I mean a "larger-than-life unattainable, unapproachable figure."

I think this is a good thing.

When I was a kid, rockstars to me were the guys that were on MTV. These were the musicians I watched on the MTV Video Music Awards with my parents. We're talking about the guys with the long hair, the mansions and the "Playmate" girlfriends.

Thanks to the Internet, every band is local in a sense. Fans can get closer to their favorite musicians - and in turn - the artists really need street team level help. Even the big bands need promotion to sell tickets to their shows, and that's where Facebook, Myspace and blogs really help.

I suppose the Internet means everyone is a pro-musician these days, too. New technology means every start-up band in the world can get together, record jam sessions and independently release a CD. By the same token, every music fan is a critic. I'm astounded at the sheer number of metal websites these days. I don't claim to be great at what I do, nor do I think BBG! is even that awesome of a site, but I update daily and try to mix the current with favorites of the past. This website has helped me get connections to some of my favorite bands, bringing me back to the main question: do rockstars still exist?

By closing the gap between fame and fan, the entire genre of metal somehow seems more real. As a kid, you tend to think everything is glamorous. Then you live it. Let me tell you that the Today show was the apex of broadcast news for me in high school. All through college, I thought I'd just go work on that program. So, I did my due diligence and worked in local news as a producer and got damn good at it too. I have enough experience to work on Today, but no thank you. There's no glamour in working all night, every holiday or fighting with people 24/7 over non-important matters. The stark reality is that there isn't in glamour in news and it's a hard job. Much like metal.

Sure, I'll assume there's nothing cooler in the world than playing live for a few thousand adoring fans, but the climb to get there is a struggle. Much like anything, without passion, you won't succeed. Metal musicians have figured out the best way to succeed is to become somewhat open to embracing fans. I have no idea what the real scene was like backstage after a metal show in the 80s because I wasn't around but I bet it was much different from today - and I don't just mean party-wise.

If you hang with a musician you admire, maybe you still consider them a rockstar. Maybe you consider them human. I'm not sure.

I do know that every musician I've met has been ultra-cool and approachable. Most are very friendly and funny - and that's after working their ass off on stage.

Maybe I was wrong all those years ago, sitting on my bedroom floor listening to my Aerosmith albums. Maybe no band is unreachable. Maybe every musician actually wants to talk to fans - at least from time to time. Perhaps the golden age of security-clad rockstars is dead.

Hallelujah.

Avenged Sevenfold Drummer Found Dead

According to the Orange County Register, Avenged Sevenfold drummer "The Rev" was found dead in his home yesterday. Huntington Beach police say it appears The Rev died of natural causes. He was 28.

How does a 28 year-old "die of natural causes?" Old age is a natural cause. The last time I checked, 28 isn't old. The coroner's office is investigating the death and I'm certain that there will be an autopsy.

By the time I was done writing this up, the band had released an official statement via their website. Here it is:

It is with great sadness and heavy hearts that we tell you of the passing today of Jimmy “The Rev” Sullivan. Jimmy was not only one of the world's best drummers, but more importantly he was our best friend and brother. Our thoughts and prayers go out to Jimmy's family and we hope that you will respect their privacy during this difficult time.

Jimmy you are forever in our hearts. We love you.

M Shadows, Synyster Gates, Zacky Vengeance and Johnny Christ

I'm upset by this news. A7X is one of my favorite bands - everyone knows that - and this news came way out of left field.

I Want Some Rare Poison Demos!

Make that - I want some rare Paris demos! You know, the ones with Matt Smith on guitar? One of the demos has been on YouTube for awhile now. The song "Talkin' Loud" is both rudimentary and cool. It sort of shows where Poison was going and it's always cool to dig up history. So I found a website that lists all these supposed rare songs available via CDR and I'll gladly pay my fair share! I guess I'll drop a line to the site owner because I want these songs. Check out this list of Poison, er, Paris, rarities:

REHEARSAL- LIVE FROM CALIFORNIA, 1985 (MATT SMITH ON GUITAR)

"GIMME NONE OF THAT"

"BOYS JUST WANNA PLAY"

"BLAME IT ON YOU"

"SHE'S A SINNER"

"STEAL AWAY THE NIGHT"

"BAD GIRLS"

"ROCK LIKE A ROCKER"

"#1 BAD BOY"

"TALKIN LOUD"

"RAZORS EDGE"

"ROCK LIKE A ROCKER"

"OUTFUCKIN'RAGOUS"

Do you happen to own any (or all) of these rarities? How do they rate? What do you think of the track below?

Best Concerts of 2009

Is it me, or has 2009 been a *very* long year? Heck, I think this month is dragging on forever...but that's another topic for another day. I saw a lot of awesome shows during 2009. Some were in tiny clubs, some at sheds or arenas, some at sweat-soaked festivals and even a few on a cruise ship! With that, my list of the concerts I enjoyed the most during 2009.

10. John Corabi @ McGuffys House of Rock in Dayton, Ohio - December
I finally heard "Hooligan's Holiday" Live!

09. Kix @ Rams Head Live in Baltimore, Maryland - September
The band played "Tear Down the Walls" and I jumped for joy!

08. Whitesnake @ Riverbend Music Center in Cincinnati, Ohio - July
Finally - "Still of the Night" and David Coverdale, live!

07. Steel Panther @ M3 Rock Festival, Baltimore, Maryland - May
The band I wanted to see live most this year rocked my socks off and made me laugh until I cried!

06. Slipknot @ Rock on the Range in Columbus, Ohio - May
A great way to kick off festival season - a crazy pit, some great friends and "Psychosocial."

05. Motley Crue @ Metro Center in Rockford, Illinois - February
A special trip to visit Heather and a night with the Crue. I've never seen Motley more tight than at this show - and a member of Cheap Trick came out to jam with the band! That's Glam.

04. Adam Lambert [American Idols Live] @ Conseco Fieldhouse in Indianapolis, Indiana - September
Heather and I live about a million miles apart now, so we met halfway in Indianapolis just to see Adam Lambert shake his money-maker live. It was worth sitting through the rest of the Idols to watch Mr. Lambert sing "Whole Lotta Love" live.

03. Drowning Pool @ Crue Fest II, Las Vegas, Nevada - August
I interviewed the band on their bus before the show and they were a jolly crew. They also single-handedly blew the other bands away with their heavy set, causing me to walk away a major fan.

02. Lynam @ Shiprocked, The Caribbean - November
I love this band, so I'm biased. Whatever. Lynam rocks my world and seeing them play an open air stage on the deck of a luxury liner at 2 a.m. the last night of Shiprocked made my cruise.

01. Britney Spears @ The Jerome Schottenstein Center, Columbus, Ohio - April
This is the single most over-the-top concert I've ever seen. Circus performers, flying dancers, Britney half-naked. There's a reason the Circus tour cost millions a week to produce. Worth every penny for those expensive tickets. Even my husband had a good time.

So, what were your favorite tours/live shows of 2009? I'm already looking ahead to 2010 and getting itchy for the festival announcements.

Craving Blue Murder

John Sykes is a great guitarist. I dig his work with Whitesnake and love many of the Blue Murder tunes. I don't know if it's just me, but I find that when I have some downtime to rest and relax, I end up going through music I don't normally spin. I don't know why I play some bands more than others. Of course, I have my favorites that get played the most - but it's more complicated than that. Some days I get on a kick and I'll just play the same things over and over. After long periods of listening to the same songs constantly, I get twitchy and start to go through my music library. I then rediscover music I already own and then another kick begins.

On this Sunday, I'm on a Blue Murder kick. I hadn't listened to the band for awhile and now I'm all over them again. So, between my cleaning, organizing and watching the Cincinnati Bengals, I'll be listening to Blue Murder.

"Valley of the Kings"

"Jelly Roll"

Dates Announced for Next Shiprocked

If you didn't get what you wanted for Christmas...maybe you should start saving to buy yourself passage on the next Shiprocked. The next floating festival will happen November 11-14, 2010 and port out of Ft. Lauderdale, Florida. The cruise will stop in Key West, Florida and Nassau, Bahamas. That's all I know for now - no info on the cruise line, cost or bands playing.

Click the link above to join the mailing list to receive future updates. That's how I learned of the date announcement.
