Motley Are Making A Big, Top Secret Announcement Today

Recently, Motley Crue started sending out emails and text messages promising a big announcement today. The Crue Fest II announcement is March 16 - so I guess count that out. It doesn't make sense to announce tour dates without a lineup, but I suppose it could happen. Some are speculating that Motley will release the video for "White Trash Circus" today. I'm not sure that constitutes a giant announcement, but we'll see. If you're not a member of the S.I.N. fan club, here are the details (and yes, I fixed the grammar errors):

Hey Crüe fans!

The Saints Of Los Angeles 2009 Tour is off with a bang. Still, something BIG is looming on the horizon.

You'll have to wait until Wednesday to find out. Be sure to keep an eye on your Inbox, and on Motley.com, all day Wednesday for some news from the Crüe.

In the mean time, if you have received a pre-sale code and purchased your ticket limit for either Crüe Fest 2008 Tour and/or SOLA 2009 Tour, we want to remind you that in order to participate in any future S.I.N. pre-sales, you'll need to renew your membership. Without giving too much away... Now might be a good time for that.

Remember, keep an eye out for a special announcement Wednesday.

Now, here's my problem with this email: it's asking S.I.N. club members to renew - again. Most people already did that to get pre-sale codes for this winter tour. I'm not dropping another 40 bucks on the fan club and I'm pretty sure I've met my ticket limit. Oh well I guess. Motley Crue might have 100 million dollars, but I sure don't!

As you well know, I'll post the big announcement here...when it's released.

A Couple Rocklahoma 09 Additions

So, Great White and Nelson are playing Rocklahoma 2009. Supposedly announcements are coming this week, so I certainly hope these two bands don't constitute all "the announcements."

If you haven't been keeping track, Great White and Nelson join Kix, Keel and the Gypsy Pistoleros to the roster. Obviously, a ton more bands are to be added.

Just for shits and giggles, here's some Great White and Nelson clips. I mean, why the hell not?

Nelson, live "After the Rain"

And here's Great White's cover of "Once Bitten, Twice Shy." This song is my favorite cover tune of all time.

I'll add these bands to my official tally in the message board area. I'm waiting on some headliners, although I'm told we can expect a Twisted Sister announcement later this week.

Slave Raider

You are probably already familiar with Slave Raider. The band formed in the mid 1980s in Minneapolis. Slave Raider is sort of a mix between RATT and W.A.S.P. - great, melodic hooks with a crazy image. Basically, true Glam.

Slave Raider released three albums on RCA:

Take The World By Storm

What Do You Know About Rock 'N Roll?

Bigger, Badder and Bolder

There's a Slave Raider Myspace page, but I don't think the band will be getting back together anytime soon. Too bad, because I think Slave Raider would probably still sound good. As you can imagine, copies of Slave Raider albums are now highly collectible. The original version of Take the World By Storm is long out of print - and sells on eBay for at least 80 bucks. If only I had some cash...I digress. Here's "Make Some Noise.

Dag the Giblets

Picture it: Saturday night, late. I don't feel well and I'm swamped. Funny that no matter how hard you try, when you feel lousy you're just not a very effective worker. So, I have a million things to catch up on today and I'm falling behind. Instead, I'm feeling crappy and scanning Metal Sludge and drinking Sprite. Then I hit gold.

Someone had posted the video of Badlands "The Making of 'The Last Time.'" Apparently, this clip is part of a larger VHS release.

I love Badlands!

I'll be honest, I didn't know that a Badlands VHS even existed. I've not seen it anywhere - record shops, eBay and garage sales included. The video, called Dag the Giblets, was made in 1991 and is since way out of print. I just checked and Amazon has one used copy...selling for over a hundred bucks! The VHS includes music videos, performance clips and family footage. I want it - but over a hundred dollars is a little much for me, considering I don't even have a VCR hooked up to my TV anymore.

Here's "The Making of 'The Last Time.'" Watch it, then let me know: do you own Dag the Giblets?

StoneRider Totally Rocks My World

You know I'm always on the hunt for new music. I get about 50 CDs a month from labels. Some of those artists are really quite good and eventually make it right here to Bring Back Glam! Other times I head to Myspace and just start clicking, looking for something exciting. Sometimes, friends refer bands.

StoneRider came to me via the friend referral.

What a great band! First off, everything about the song "Juice Man" is Glam. There's lyrics about partying and women and a big guitar solo. The video shows  the band in all their gritty glory, guitars in tow, hair flying.

StoneRider are on Trustkill, one of my favorite labels. The band is from Atlanta, and definitely pays tribute to their southern heritage in their guitar hooks and melodies -- yeah, they sound like a hybrid of Black Stone Cherry and AC/DC and maybe Lynyrd Skynyrd. They're not necessarily new: I've just now gotten around to listening to them proper over the past few days.

StoneRider are doing ShipRocked, so I guess I'll see them live aboard the ship.

Here's the video for "Juice Man." Watch the clip, let me know your thoughts.

Sometimes I Miss Cassette Tapes

I live and die by my iPod.

I love the fast clicking of songs. The ease of skipping the tracks I don't like. The ability to add new tunes by the click of a mouse.

Sometimes, though, I miss the old fashioned cassette tape.

First off, cassettes were always cheaper than CDs, so if you were a little short on dough, you had another option if you really needed some new music in a bad way. Second, the format of a cassette meant you either listened to an entire album - or wasted a ton of time searching for your favorite song. It's because of the cassette tape that I know so many B-sides. I was too darn lazy to hunt for songs, so I just popped the tape into the car stereo and let it play.

Remember when cars and boom boxes came out with the functionality to "skip" songs on tapes? Man, that was awesome. Mind you, I never had a car that could do this - but still. I did have a stereo that would let me go back and forth in Hysteria as many times as needed. Great time saver.

Eventually I got a CD player for my car and the cassette player was no more. While flipping CDs was much faster for me, I sometimes found myself missing the cassette tape.

For awhile, labels released singles on CDs but they were usually way too expensive for one song. The cassette single was definitely my friend. I had tons of those. They were usually two bucks or less and - obviously - featured a band's most recent radio hit. To this day I'm still baffled that labels use the term "single" because there really isn't such a distinction anymore. Sure, there are songs released to radio with deliberate planning to sell albums - but it is very rare to walk into a music shop and see a CD single on the shelves. I guess iTunes has replaced this as well.

So, I love my digital music but I also missed the "forced fandom" of some lesser known tracks that cassettes afforded. I remember using my little Walkman on school trips, playing my favorite "mix tape" of the moment while trying my best to block out the noise of the stupid boys inevitably sitting beside me - belching.

Do you ever miss cassettes?
