Alice Cooper, TV Star!

Alice Cooper will star in Jesus Christ Superstar Live! next year. The production will air on Easter Sunday on NBC.

Cooper will play King Herod in the production. Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice wrote a big rock number for Herod's character. Basically, this is going to be awesome and I'll be watching!

I wonder if this means that they wrote a new song for Herod, or if they mean the already show-stopping number from the original album. I can easily hear Alice nailing that song with all of its over-the-top sarcastic brilliance. "Prove to me that you're no fool. Walk across my swimming pool." Can't you just hear Alice sneering out that line? Anyway, this will all hinge on who they cast as Jesus and Judas. IMHO, nothing has ever topped the original 1971 album with ian Gillan as Jesus and Murray Head as Judas. Carl Anderson was also an incredible Judas, but he took the character in a more funky, almost angry direction than Head's anguished interpretation. IN fact, when the music was written, they deliberately wrote some of the high notes to be just outside of Head's comfortable vocal range so his voice would crack. My wife and I had the good fortune to see the stage production with Sebastian Bach and Carl Anderson. Bach was surprisingly good, but Anderson was off-the-charts awesome. I never could stand Ted Neeley as Jesus. His voice was too nasal and whiny for my tastes. Anyway, I'll definitely be watching on Easter.

remember when on That Metal Show, they used to ask the artists, 'If you could've written one song, what would it be?" My answer would have been, "Imagine", but a close second probably would be, "Herod's Song".

I definitely be watching this.

HIM, my guess is it will be the original song Cooper will perform. My theory is “Why fix it if it ain’t broke.”

That said, they could have written a new song for him to create additional hype but that would seem BLASPHEMOUS to me, as the original score and songbook are already perfect!

p.s. The original album has a special place in my heart as I played it to death when I was a kid attending Catholic school looking for a way out. And it should go without saying, HIM, your words describing the album are New York Times review worthy. Thank you for the insights!
