Yeah, they had “Slide It In”, “Whitesnake” and “Slip of the Tongue” but that ain’t nothing compared to Coverdale in Deep Purple and it’s criminal how he shafted John Sykes, the creative force behind their self-titled album also known as “1987”.
Still, I’ll go see ‘em as it’s only 15 minutes from my house and I’m sure Devlin and the rest of the clowns who are foolish enough to ride this snake will do a fine job.
“Are you ready to Rock? Children of the Night! Are you ready to roll? Children of the night!”
Personally, I like him as a second tier Purple singer. I also liked his early 'Snake blues stuff. But I hold the UK version of _Slide It In_ in high regard. The US version? Not so much. How can a person, in a shameless (and Coverdale has never met a chance at stardom that he didn't leg-hump) bid for US listeners, throw out the majesty of Galley, Moody, and Powell (not to mention Lord and Hodgkinson) and muddle it up with the redo featuring Murray and Sykes?!?! The reason people didn't take to the album had nothing to do with the UK version not having that "special" something. No, they noted something that is there in both versions: Coverdale stoops low and trips all over his "come hither" winks and nods and jabs at sexual innuendo. Put it this way: Plant borrowed the juice from a lemon (that Robert Johnson actually picked) and did well by his fans; in Coverdale's hands, it would be a lemonade stand of sexual pleasures served in red Solo cups.
Yet still, _Slide It In_ is a great album for its time, even if Coverdale needs to constantly thank Moody and Galley for their input. Thankfully, in a bid for more cash, they did release a version of the CD that featured both mixes. Guess which one never gets played at my house? And a good quality video of the UK line-up never ceases to amaze me.
Did I mention that Cozy Powell is awesome? Just wanted to make sure.
Anyway, back to my intro. I used to have a list of about 20 quote or so in my cubicle at work. One of 'em was the opening lyrics to Here I Go Again, "I don't know where I'm goingn but I do know where I've been." A Co-worker (my age, into the same music) recognized the lyric and asked me, "I guess you really like Whitesnake". When I asked why, He pointed out the obvious reference to the lyric I had posted. I kinda giggled and replied, " never thought of it that way...I didn't get that lyric from a Whitesnake song, I stole it from a Joan Jett song (who probably co-opted it from some other song).
Check Coverdale in that Purple Live In Japan video of them performing “Highway Star” with Bolin on guitar! ... I rest our case!
