'Scarlet' -- New Rolling Stones Video

The Rolling Stones have a new video for their song "Scarlet." The video - shot socially distant of course - will be on the upcoming re-release and box set version of the 1973 album Goats Head Soup. The video stars Paul Mescal of the TV show Normal People.

"Scarlet" was an unheard track until now. It was originally recorded in 1974 with Jimmy Page and Traffic’s Ric Grech.

There will be two more previously unheard songs as part of the Goats Head Soup package. It is due in early September.

Always liked this album, despite it not being considered Stones at their best. Heartbreaker is one my favorite Stones songs ever, Angie is another classic and it’s got great deep cuts like 100 Years Ago and Star Star.

Not bad at all. Sorta' reminds of why I like(d) The Stones as a casual fan. Has that classic sound to it.

Basileus, care to recommend some other deeper cuts to casual fans like myself? I know all the hits. But I'd enjoy some direction if you have the time.

As a hard core Stones fan its hard for me to have perspective on which songs others will consider deep cuts. There are probably songs that I think are amazing and have listened to a thousand times that others have never heard before. But I will give it a try. First, I’m skipping the four perfect albums: Beggar’s Banquet, Let it Bleed, Sticky Fingers, Exile. Each is a masterpiece and all songs are great. So taking it from Goat Head’s Soup:

- Hide Your Love
- Winter
- Star Star

From It’s Only Rock and Roll:
- Time Waits for No One (best guitar solo in a RS song ever)
- Fingerprint File

Black and Blue:
- Hand of Fate
- Crazy Mama

Some Girls (near masterpiece, all songs are great and well known)
- Before They Make Me Run

Emotional Rescue:
- title song

Tattoo You (near masterpiece)
- Little T&A
- Worries About You
- Waiting on a Friend

Steel Wheels:
- Slipping Away

Voodoo Lounge:
- Sparks Will Fly
- Blinded by Rainbows

Bridges to Babylon:
- Saint of Me
- Too Tight

Thanks, Basileus. I appreciate the suggestions. I even feel better about my Stones' knowledge given that I knew a couple of the ones you listed. But I will look the others up, given that I do have some free time these days!

These days, you are a 'king' (a nod to your moniker) amongst posters!

As rough shod as this song is (the story behind it is classic!), it’s still pretty awesome!

Still, why does it seem like Kief Richard (Richards actually dropped the “s” at the urging of Anita Van Pallenberg for awhile and “Kief” is an old nickname) and Woody (Ron Wood) can’t seem to resist trying to bury Jimmy Page (while he’s still alive, haha!!).

They’re even muddling his riff a bit with their dual Chuck Berry mascinations (lacerations?) just as they did to him on “Dirty Work” when they called him in to try and save that project (allegedly, “album”), especially his solos on both that record and here on “Scarlet”.

Why? Because they don’t wanna be shown up by him, as he is a vastly superior player than both of them put together (and then some!) ...

One last cool detail about this video (though surely there are more) is it was filmed at London Claridges, one of The Stones longtime haunts as they all took turns holing up there at one time or another (actually, many times over the years), just as movie stars and singers are prone to living at the Chateau Marmont in L.A.).

Here are some of my favorite “deep cuts” (is there really such a thing? I suppose) from over the years (even going back a bit), HIM and Basileus, if I may ...

“The Singer Not The Song” (from “December’s Children (and Everybody’s)”, 1965)

“I Am Waiting” (from “Aftermath”, 1966)

“The Under Assistant West Coast Promotions Man” (from “Out Of Our Heads”, 1965)

“2000 Light Years From Home” (from “Their Satanic Majesty’s Request”, 1967)

“No Expectations” (from “Beggar’s Banquet”, 1968)

“Monkey Man” (granted, not really a deep cut from “Let It Bleed”, 1969)

“Midnight Rambler” (again, not exactly “deep”, well, “cut”, that is, from “Get Your Ya-Ya’s Out”, 1970)

“All Down The Line” (right again, not that deep, from “Exile On Main St.”, 1972)

“Dancing with Mr. D” (from “Goats Head Soup”, 1973)

“Time Waits For No One” (indeed, Basileus, from “It’s Only Rock & Roll”, 1974)

“Melody” (from “Black & Blue”, 1976)

“Lies” (from “Some Girls”, 1978) ... Did you say “‘near’ masterpiece”, Basileus? Hahaha!!! Surely, you jest!

“Let Me Go” (from “Emotional Rescue”, 1980)

“Hang Fire” (from “Tattoo You”, 1981)

Sorry, boys, but they really started to mail it in after “Tattoo You” ...

Appreciate additional songs to ponder, Metalboy!

If they really want to get under Pagey's skin, they should invite Robbie Williams to join them for a song as well!

Haha!!, HIM! ...

Thought of two more ... Again, not exactly ultra deep cuts as they do get a lot of play on all platforms ... Still KILLER, nonetheless ...

From “Sticky Fingers” (1971) ...

“Can You Hear Me Knockin’” and “Bitch” ...
