Rock on the Range Dates Announced

Rock on the Range, held annually in Columbus, Ohio, will take place May 16 - 18. Lay-away tickets will go on-sale Cyber Monday at 10am and VIP/Hotel/Camping packages will go on-sale December 5 at 10am.

I just want to see I See Stars - I hope they play the festival. There's been a lot of repeats at the festival over the past few years, so here's hoping for some new blood and a giant headliner!

Rock on the Range is part of AEG Live's "World's Loudest Month."

World’s Loudest Month, created in partnership by AEG Live and Danny Wimmer Presents, continues to grow in 2014. Featuring the biggest names in rock music performing in seven distinct U.S. concert atmospheres, the World’s Loudest Month is excited to announce the addition of two new festivals, as well as the 2014 festival dates. In 2013, the World’s Loudest Month featured over 125 artists playing for more than a quarter of a million rock music fans across the country on five consecutive weekends, confirming that rock music is as vital as ever.

Rock to the Rescue, Featuring STYX and REO Speedwagon

This is a great idea and cause. If you're around the area during the show, please consider buying a ticket and showing up to rock!

Los Angeles, CA & Bloomington, IL (November 21, 2013) - In response to the recent wave of storms that brought tornadoes and highly-damaging winds to the Midwest, STYX and REO SPEEDWAGON have announced that they are using their combined might to help raise funds for those affected by this tragedy.  On Dec. 4, these proud members of the Midwest’s rock elite will appear with special guests (to be announced shortly) at U.S. Cellular Coliseum in Bloomington, Illinois in a fundraiser: Rock To The Rescue Extends A Hand To Those In Need. Funds will be earmarked for affected families in central Illinois communities that were left reeling in the wake of devastating tornadoes and winds. In order to maximize charitable proceeds, the artists, along with numerous vendors, crew and local staff, have generously forgone any personal compensation for the evening.

Tickets for this performance go on sale at www.ticketmaster.com for $58, $43 and $28 (tickets are subject to applicable service charges and event time and date are subject to change). Visit www.uscellularcoliseum.com/ for up-to-date information.  Donations to Rock to the Rescue can be made at www.rocktotherescue.net.

STYX guitarist and IL native James “JY” Young said, “As we approach the 50th anniversary of JFK’s assassination, I’m reminded of his famous quote, ‘Ask not what your country can do for you, ask what you can do for your country.’  The good people of Illinois lent support and a helping hand to every artist on this bill at different times in their respective careers, and we owe a tremendous debt.  It’s our turn to ask what we can do for this great State, and the best way we know to help those in need is to get on stage and let the incredible healing power of music play its part in rebuilding Illinois."

REO SPEEDWAGON singer/guitarist Kevin Cronin said, "I am Illinois born and bred. REO Speedwagon is an Illinois band. The word ‘Illinois’ is music to me. The utter devastation and human suffering in Washington, IL and the surrounding areas is heartbreaking. I believe that we need to take care of our own... the people of Illinois are our own, and we are theirs."

"With our company being based in this area for over 40 years and my family living in Pekin which was effected by the storm, we wanted to do something to help all those affected.  Everyone at Jay Goldberg Events have had friends, family members and employees who were directly impacted by the storm," said Jay Goldberg of Jay Goldberg Events and Entertainment.

City of Bloomington Manager David Hales said, "The City of Bloomington has heavy hearts for those affected in the recent tornado outbreaks around Central Illinois.  We know that our city and surrounding cities will pull together to help out and support this cause.  We are glad to be hosting this benefit concert in our city."

"We are honored and excited to be hosting this benefit concert.  We are passionate about our business and know this is the best way that we could help out.  Everyone involved in putting on this concert has dropped everything to make this happen, and we are looking forward to a very successful event to help those that need it," said John Butler, President of Central Illinois Arena Management that operates the US Cellular Coliseum.

Rock to the Rescue is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization, whose mission is to build strong, healthy communities through the support of grassroots organizations across the country. Rock to the Rescue originally started in 2001 as a result of the 9/11 terrorist attacks and is the brainchild of STYX’s Tommy Shaw and REO SPEEDWAGON’s Kevin Cronin.  The two musicians brought together bands and artists such as Bad Company, Journey, Survivor, Kansas, Lynyrd Skynyrd and many others to be part of “Volunteers For America” concert events in Dallas and Atlanta that ultimately raised over $775,000 for victims of 9/11, as well as the Port Authority police department in New York City.   On the bands’ last tour together, the Midwest Rock N' Roll Express,  Rock to the Rescue not only raised thousands of dollars for local charities at each tour stop, but also raised $108,000 which went directly to the Boston One Fund, helping victims of the Boston Marathon bombings. Austin Winkler, Out

Hinder has parted ways with singer Austin Winkler. Most know I'm not a Hinder fan, but a lot of you are, so this seemed like important news to pass along.

Austin had to pull out of a tour recently for rehab and Jared Weeks of Saving Abel filled in for him on most dates. I just spoke with Jared for the Dayton City Paper and we chatted about the Hinder gigs.

The band isn't breaking up, so it will be interesting to see who the remaining members of Hinder choose as their new singer. Thoughts?

Black Friday Music Deals?

I'm a big fan of Black Friday. I like searching for deals and getting some savings (pro tip: a lot of the "deals" are crap, so do your homework before you buy) but I never really see any good ads for music sales. I'm assuming Amazon will discount a lot of their albums, so I'll stock up if that happens. I know a few of the big box stores put "select" albums on sale for $5 or $7 but these "selections" are never metal bands. A lot of stores (Target, Sam's Club) will have deals on discounted iTunes cards, so I'll grab some of those too.

Black Friday will also be Record Store Day. A lot of artists will release special albums to music retailers that day. Record Store Day is always a great chance to support small businesses, too. Still, I wish there were more music deals out there. These days, music just seems like an afterthought, less important than an "add on" item.

Do you know of any good music deals for the upcoming holiday season?

Aerosmith Will Headline Download

It's hard to believe, but we already know all the headliners for Download Festival in June 2014. The annual event happens at Donnington Park in the UK. The other two headliners are Linkin Park and Avenged Sevenfold.

Other confirmed acts include Alter Bridge, Rob Zombie and Fall Out Boy. Obviously a slew of other bands will be announced in the coming months. I want to go just to see Aerosmith, but it just isn't going to happen. Apparently, Aerosmith is rumored to do some domestic dates this summer, so I'll definitely catch one of those if they come around my area.

Is anyone planning on attending Download this year?

Aerosmith performed at Download in 2010. Here's a clip of that show.

Memory Lane: Van Halen, 'Balance' Tour

I love the Van Halen album Balance and I love that I got to go to the tour back in 1995, too. That was my first really big rock show, so it holds a special place in my heart. Low and behold, someone has uploaded an entire night of the Balance tour to YouTube. Watching the footage really brings back some good memories of listening to Balance on repeat while sitting on the floor on my bedroom back in high school.

Which One Of You Is This?

This video is epic: a Bon Jovi fan lip syncing to "Livin' On A Prayer" during a Celtic's game. Talk about grabbing the spotlight! I think this video is old but I just saw it for the first time yesterday. Hilarious.
