So I Interviewed Nikki Sixx and Vince Neil...

The other day I interviewed Nikki Sixx and Vince Neil of Motely Crue. As you know, Motley made their "huge - colossal - earth-shattering" tour announcement Tuesday night. Both Nikki and Vince were up bright and early the next morning for a satellite media tour of television stations all over the country. I interviewed the pair for my old station in Dayton, Ohio.
As you'll soon see, Vince and Nikki were less than interested in doing press and were also crabby as hell. Whatever.
Just click the video below. Because I did the interview as a true satellite, you can't hear my questions. My husband slated the questions, so you will see what I was asking and then be able to see Vince and Nikki give their answers.
Special thanks to Heather, Brad, Stacy and Peter for making this happen...even if Nikki kept messing with his hair. And iPhone. And nose. And ear.
Meh, screw it: just push play.

And guess what? Speaking as a former music publicist...even if you know SO much about the person you're interviewing that you know what kind of friggin' underwear they wear...if they don't feel like giving 100% during the interview...then all of your questions and knowledge about them is out the fucking window.
Is it my imagination or is Nikki getting bigger than Vince????
something happen off the air?
I'm even more impressed that someone who claims not to remember an entire (and most import) decade of their career managed to write 2 books!
Again... disappointed that they didn't throw a band even remotely close to their genre on their tour!
All these comments have amused me very much over the last few days. Thanks for reading.
I always wonder why people get so bent out of shape when anyone says one bad word about Motley Crue. It makes no sense - I love the band, but they are more than flawed when it comes to the human condition. As a journalist, you need to examine those flaws and expose them to the buying public.
I must admit that after reviewing tapes of the same satellite tour I am more than pleased with my interview. My questions really were different - and if you don't like that then I guess you can turn on your local news station and hear again how many copies "Dr. Feelgood" sold and how Motley Crue "are the bad boys of rock."
By this point, I've interviewed a very sizable number of "rock stars" (whatever that word means) and I learn something important with each interview. In this case, I learned about true friendship - and that has nothing to do with Motley Crue. It's a personal story, so you'll just have to keep guessing - or badmouthing - whichever you prefer. I never block or censor comments on Bring Back Glam! unless you are targeting a person's race, sexuality, religion or the like. It's always been my experience that the uneducated comments are the most enjoyable.

They are my favorite band and I have seen many interviews of them. I wouldn't say they were crabby at all but perhaps a little tired from the big event of announcing and talking. I liked the questions you asked and they seemed to set you apart from the typical type of questions except for that last one about how many songs on the new CD. Maybe a question geared to what motivates certain songs or could they explain what goes into making a song from all angles, including how each band member prepares or contributes and use SOLA as an example since it is new. But that is just a suggestion.
Also, us not hearing how you asked the questions isn't really fair to them when you lable them as crabby. Where you sarcastic or condescending or acted disinterested in doiing the interview? Your presence and body language also has an impact as well. I'm sure you weren't this but maybe expected more elaboration in some answers and were disappointed. But after hearing many interviews, usually both of them are willing to go the extra mile in answering questions while being polite in the Motley way possible! I even heard one asked of Vince Neil that was on YouTube that appeared to be from a local cable access station of some guy asking Vince the most insane questions about nothing. For example one question asked of Vince was, "Other than you who do you think of when you hear Vince?" To which he replied with a chuckle, "I don't know. Vince Gill?" With such a knowledge of life experiences in good and bad, there are a lot of great questions that could have been asked of Vince. You didn't do that thank god!
Nice job in securing the interview and thank you for sharing it.
Obviously they were prepared to answer questions off of the press release, and Allyson, you threw them off guard by being informed enough to ask them things that fans really want to know.
I think the other highlight was when they said "We don't care about money.. we just want to bring our music to our fans."
That's right.. that's why those concert tickets were free.
Oh wait.
And despite the fact that they were less than receptive to some of the questions.. she remains a devoted fan.
I, on the other hand, may hold a grudge. LOL
