Mike Portnoy Can Play Anything

Seriously, Mike Portnoy really is a great drummer. He recently proved his virtuosity by playing a lot of classic metal tunes... on a Hello Kitty child's set. The video below is pretty darn funny.

But just as annoying as Phil Sim's or Joe Buck's mindless egocentric commentary during NFL games, this guy just can't resist the most banal running play-by-play I've ever heard since watching Phil Mickelson (another annoying bore) win The Masters.
I will say this though... It's the best Portannoy's ever sounded on drums simply because he's forced to not overplay AND he's playing other people's songs since his stuff is such unrecognizable crap.
And of course, the whole thing is driven by his outsized ego... Just one example... he just had to get in there that he advanced the drum pedal or some sh*t. Please spare us any more of this nonsense and Bring Back Glam! asap!
Thank you... thank you... thank you... Joe Buck is the absolute worse, finally someone understands.
And, I thought the video was hilarious for the following reason...I live in a small house with neighbors all around me. In order to keep the peace, I bought a Pearl Rhythm Traveler drum kit which is much quieter than the vintage Rogers kit I used to own. the Rhythm Traveler is a nice little kit, but unless you replace all of the heads, and buy new cymbals, it sounds almost as bad as that Hello Kitty one that Portnoy is playing on. so, the sound of the video reminded me of what it sounds like when I play now. It proves that the sound of the kit is just as important as what is being played on it.
And Metalboy! Portnoy didn't say that he advanced any drum pedal. He was saying that the Slayer and Metallica tunes he played are usually done with two kick pedals, and he had to try to make it work with one.
I'm not a big Portnoy fan either, but I really think he was just having some fun this time.
.As for Joe Buck, I'm elated to find out I'm not the only one who wants to stab himself in the eardrum with a rusty ice pick every time I hear him. Guy grates on my nerves and ruins every NFL and MLB game he verbally ejaculates all over.
Self deprecating, you say, Gary? I actually think he's actually belittling the other bands he's covering by playing them on the Hello Kitty drum kit. Watch it again and listen carefully... He never once makes fun of himself... actually it's quite the opposite, saying he's a "professional", etc... That's not self-deprecating... That's egocentric narcissism, which of course would be his default mode since he's nothing more than an overplaying technician, not a creative idea person, or at least not one who has ever really contributed anything of lasting value in terms of songs, i.e. John Bonham, Keith Moon or even Zoltan What's-His-Name from Slaughter / Vince Neil! Now those guys are drummers, and all possess(ed) self deprecating humor!
My Dad was a former sportswriter for Sports Illustrated and, before that, The Chicago Tribune, used to call these network "color" guys "Jollyboys", hahaha!!!
He also knew Buck's Dad and said the same things about him you are, Bob... Obviously, his son learned nothing from him.
Personality has nothing to do with ability. He has both in spades. Its just that the former often eclipses the latter (a drumming version of LSD).
