That Time When Winger Played 'The Arsenio Hall Show'

I rediscovered this beauty while clicking around YouTube last night. Winger performs "Headed For A Heartbreak" on The Arsenio Hall Show way back on October 11, 1989. Good times. I miss performances like this.

No matter what Beevus and Butthead say, I was always impressed with Kip's musical abilities. Personally this band is on my bucket list to see one more time around.
DT story time (LOL): Whitesnake was headlining (Tommy Aldridge-Ma Fav drummer!) Forevermore Tour I think with Tesla, no mention of any other acts on the bill, maybe a warm up band from Toledo? Anyways....
Who walks out, by himself, 12 string acoustic? Kip Winger. He did about 5 songs, all by himself, flippin nailed it!! That right there impressed me and gained a lot of respect. Always wished Reb would of came out and did a couple songs with him .That would of made my night, haha.

kip, solo with his 12-string, is a fantastic show. but expect a lot of songs from later albums - if it's a full show. plus he'll come out and talk to fans after. awesome that you posted this on rod's birthday.

OH yeah! Wasn't a big fan of their music back then, but all of them absolutely had chops to burn. Their musical ability belied the cheesiness of their tunes.

@bob: I always said, "It's cheese for sure, but I'll take a nice slice of brie."

Arsenio Hall was badass back in the day he also had Poison, Warrant & I believe even Vixen on a couple times!

I find myself, more and more, pulling off chunks of the cheese wheel that was some of the metal back in the day.

Then? I turned my nose up at it out of a misplaced sense of "purity." Now? I miss this type of music and appreciate it more than I could ever have back in the day.

All that said, no one can look at the cheesecake photos Kip was sitting for back then and not go: "Oh, no. No. Noooooooooooo!!!" Except, perhaps, the ladies. He clearly knew who was buttering his bread. Chops notwithstanding.

Awesome band, great record and sadly way too long ago ...

Winger was always one of my guilty pleasures, aside from the whack posing be always did. But their Pull record has always been my favorite, and is criminally overrated imo. I saw many of these bands live and always wanted to see them, but never got the chance. I just wish him and Tom Kiefer would get their respective bands back together and start rocking again, instead of playing their new lame ass tunes.

Him, you are so right my friend. For example, back in the day, I absolutely hated Poison when they're first record came out. I thought I had more musical integrity than to like Poison. Now, more than 30 years later, listening to that album brings me happiness, and memories of days gone by, even though I didn't like it back then. it's strange, but I'm glad I'm not the only one who feels that way. sometimes I wonder what my youth would have been like if I embraced more of the things that other people enjoyed instead of having a holier than thou attitude about them. I'm not saying that I wish I had been a sheep, but I wish I had at least opened myself up to more popular things instead of immediately dismissing them out of hand.

To this day, one of the best live bands around..they play literally 50 yards from my house every summer at Wallys Pub on Hampton Beach and its a guaranteed great show

Thanks for the nod, Bob. I think there are a lot of people like us. A lot of old suppositions are sanded down by time. And the music remains. Thing is, so do we!
