The Amazon Music Hair Metal Station Is Really Good

Last night, Eric and I were driving home from going out for pizza. He grabbed his phone and hit the Bluetooth and said "turn on the hair metal station, it's really good." I sort of stared at him because 1) We have satellite radio, so we get Hair Nation and 2) We own every song on the Amazon Hair Metal station. Still, I relented and turned it on. Eric commented on every song that came up: "November Rain," - Classic! "Is This Love?" - Amazing.

I stared at him again.

Then DLR-era Van Halen popped up. Then Aerosmith and I started to get it. There were bands on here that aren't really Hair Metal but are our favorites and the convenience of having the bands all grouped together was appealing.

So we're bopping down the highway, listening to some Heart and then reminiscing about the time Carrie Underwood did "Alone" on American Idol like a decade ago (seriously).

So for whatever it's worth, you should give the Amazon Music "Hair Metal" station a try, especially if you don't have a satellite radio subscription. I have the more expensive Unlimited subscription and now I can't imagine life without it - basically any song in the world, immediately at my fingertips, streaming on my phone and downloaded for offline use too.

Thanks for the tip, Allyson. Any station, loosely defined, playing metal is a good station (even Sirius/XM).

I know a lot of people love Spotify too. Me, personally? I just set up an awesome slew of Pandora stations and let 'er rip!

Terrestrial radio gave up on us long ago. Such a pity. I still remember KOME (those yellow stickers were everywhere!) and KSJO (which now plays Bollywood music) in the Bay Area.

KNAC in Long Beach was the best of all time on the FM dial 105.5 ..

Shawn, I was living in New Jersey during the glory days of KNAC, but from the few airchecks I've found on Youtube of KNAC, they seemed pretty awesome. KNAC was definitely in the right place at the right time, and they made the most of it. I remember back in the mid 80s, WYSP in Philadelphia, which I listened to a lot back then, also had a hard rock/metal format, but it did terribly in the ratings. the format was at the right time, but the wrong place. These days, in the car, we either listen to XM, or we shove a memory stick loaded with music into the USB port of the car stereo. At home, I've got an FM transmitter hooked up to my computer where I have over 6TB of albums organized by genre. I simply decide what kind of music I want to hear, load up a bunch of albums on the computer, turn on the stereo, and I'm good for the night. If I may quote one of my favorite songs by Gary Bartz, "Music is my sanctuary."

Hi Bob - I envy your storage and organization skills - I am using a USB port but I never got all my CD's converted to .mp3's so I suffer some :) - I use Spotify playlists on my phone and I have a 100 disc CD changer I used to use a lot but it is collecting dust right now.

Bob - If you were in Jersey in the 80s, then I would assume you also listened to WSOU - Seton Hall's Pirate Radio! I believe it was '86 when they went to a Hard Rock/Metal format. And they're still going strong today, albeit with a much harder format. But they still do an 80s themed show, I believe on Thursday nights. Although since you were listening to a Philly station, perhaps you were too far south in Jersey and couldn't get WSOU. One of the best college radio stations in the nation (especially back in the day!).

Dude, I lived smack in the middle of Jersey, so I got the Philly, NYC, and Lehigh Valley radio stations. I also got WDHA and WSOU. WSOU was indeed awesome. also, I don't know how close you lived to Flemington, but starting in '86, I did a weekly metal show on WCVH FM for a couple years. those were amazing times.
