Van Halen Archive - Letterman

Here's one from the Van Halen archive: David Lee Roth doing Letterman back in 1985. Charisma and flair! Roth is just one of the reasons Van Halen hit so big - not the best technical singer but just an over the top showman that people liked to watch. Seems like we never see interviews like this anymore.

We never see interviews like this because Dave wasn't asked what side of the political aisle he sits on.... which is so refreshing compared to today's "interviews". Like you must declare McCarthy style and then the interviewee can proceed and the audience will or will not have a positive connection.

On a better note, the 6:00 mark about the "next" Van Halen record is pure gold.

If you’re not anti Trump, you are completely lambasted & looked down upon. That’s the stone cold truth. And I don’t gaff either way so save it. I’m anti politics in general & not a fan of Trump.

If you get a chance, youtube, Joe Rogan had Dave on for like 3 hours not too long ago, very interesting stuff.

This proves once again Roth to be charismatic, charming, funny, fascinating, intelligent, full of wit and engaged in the moment, unlike so many of his peers. The interview shows why he is a true original and irreplaceable.

There’s only one David Lee Roth and only one Van Halen — the one he fronted. All the other stuff was just generic fluff by comparison.

p.s. Thanks for the Joe Rogan tip, Gunntherd. I will check it out! And hats off to Letterman who also reminds us here of what a great and funny interviewer he was back in the 80’s.

Metalboy!, my good sir, I completely agree with you. DLR wasn't just a front man. He was an entertainer, storyteller, amateur comedian at times, and could absolutely be counted on at any moment to bust out with an ear-catching quote that could make you laugh or make you think. DLR also did an interview with Joe Rogan a few years ago that is equally-interesting listening. The man just has that inate gift of gab that can't be taught.

So, did Rogan try to dare Roth into eating any donkey semen (apologies, ladies) covered roaches or any sh*t like that he would serve contestants on “Fear Factor”?

Actually Roth should have turned the tide on Rogan by bringing something equally gag worthy onto the set of his recent interview and daring him to eat it!
