For The KISS Fans...

Tommy Thayer is holding a contest on his Instagram and giving away a stage-worn guitar strap. I know some of you are big KISS fans so I wanted to pass along this Tweet I just saw scroll by my feed:
As a holiday gift I’m giving away one of my stage-used guitar straps on Instagram. Head to my Instagram page @tommy_thayer_official to enter! pic.twitter.com/KjyyV8KZ5b

But, boy oh boy, the stuff people have to do to keep their social media 'standing' trending/interesting/etc. As per Thayer's official entry rules:
To enter:
1. Like this photo
2. Follow me @tommy_thayer_official
3. Tag a friend in the comments for an entry (unlimited entries allowed)
Bonus: Share this post on your story for an additional 10 entries and tag me
I get it. It's the game that has to be played. But I count myself lucky to not be a digital native (or a 60 year old, for that matter) trying to extend my brand. I mean, he could give the strap away randomly based on entries at his website. But that creates less hits, as it is only catering to an already existing fan base. Thing is, this sort of thing is a version of the same. So, again, you gotta do what you gotta do.
Hope whoever wins really enjoys it. And that isn't me being sarcastic.
Thank you for shedding some insight into what’s really going on here. .
I am in the midst of overseeing the launch of two of my company’s new brands and, as you and others here are probably more than aware, social media has become a labyrinth of strategy and calculation to the point of stifling the sometimes more positive and seemingly spontaneous experience one should encounter on Facebook, Twitter and “Insty” (as the “on-trend” younger generation handling it all refer to Instagram), etc.
More simply put, Thayer’s “Holiday Giveaway” feels more like he’s holding his present hostage.
Surely, there’s a more clever, even heartfelt, way to play this that would actually get MORE social media buzz but the social media company KISS presumably farmed this out to is apparently too lazy to figure out what it may be.
Super cool guitar strap, though.
It's not like a giveaway like this is going to result in a windfall for him. And he's already really successful, so I can't imagine that his 100k followers on Insta is helping him make income anywhere close to what Kiss pays. But who knows? It's obviously been a tough year on touring musicians, and everyone has bills to pay.
If I had to guess, I'd say that this is something that management advised him to do, and that he's just doing what they say. In fact, his management probably has a social media person/team who's doing the work on his behalf.
It is a cool strap, though!
Bryon, you add a bit more nuance to my initial point. Appreciate it. So much of this is, as Metalboy! notes, is smoke and mirrors. Faux images selling faux realities to real people . . . who respond in strangely Pavlovian-non-faux ways!!! But, hey, it works, right? Sometime you create trends; other times, you follow them.
Mike, I have to ask: is the 'big' a reference to girth or to magnitude of devotion or both? I kid. I think I already know the answer.
Funny Gary, you kill me as always!
HIM, I guess Thayer took over Jamie St. James old job of mowing the lawn back in the Black n’ Blue days when he was $immons’ boy ... Hey, I’m not knocking it ... I would gladly do it!
@MB. I wonder if it’s a Kiss commemorative zero turn mower at Genes pad.....
Yer killin’ me, Gary ... Yer KILLIN’ ME!
p.s. I assume you’ll be resuming your stand up tour at comedy clubs all across America, once the pandemic has subsided. You shoulda been a joke writer for “That Metal Show”, because Florentine and that dude with the over the top muttonchops (really the only amusing thing about him), Jamieson weren’t all that funny, except, of course, when they were trashing Trunk.
