Saxon Release 'Super Nova' Lyric Video

What a workday! When I say this was a long one... well, I mean it! I'm exhausted and so glad tomorrow is Friday.

I was pleased to see a new Saxon video pop-up in my YouTube alerts. The lyric video is for the track "Super Nova" from the album Carpe Diem. Maybe our friend London will pop in to leave a comment. He does love Saxon after all. This is real metal, ya'll.

I DO love these guys! Ever since my first concert in Leeds seeing them in early 1981 on the Denim and Leather tour, all the way thru seeing them here in Dayton, OH a few years back with Allyson and Eric.

As a teenager, I painted the axe-based "S" of Saxon on my bedroom wall, and my mum sewed patches onto my denim jacket. My favorite live album of all time is still 1982's "The Eagle Had Landed" (UFO's "Strangers in the Night" and MSG's "One Night at Budokan" being close seconds).

When I got this CD (yep that's what I use) I was a little worried by the title track, which I don't like, but other songs like "The Pilgrimage" and this one are better.

I have always said the thing that separates Saxon from Anvil is not drive, not determination, not even guts in the face of changing headwinds. No, the thing that distinguishes them is talent. Simple truths are often, well, simple. I wish Saxon had received the same docu-treatment that Anvil did years back. Not that it would have necessarily moved the needle for them. But they have been a fairly consistent bunch, doing what they do, and doing it well.

By the way, I wish no ill will to Anvil. Glad they got a second shot at being seen and heard. I'm just saying . . . the range of their influence does not speak to the range of their talent.

HIM, Saxon did get the documentary treatment, or rather, “Mockumentary” treatment, albeit, indirectly, with the movie, “Spinal Tap”.

As some may be aware, Michael McKean and Harry Scherer shadowed Saxon for two months, traveling with them on tour, as part of their research to write the script.

I first heard these guys on Loyola’s college radio station in 1984 in Baltimore, and then saw them, still in the classic line-up, POINT BLANK (of course) off “Innocence Is No Excuse” at the legendary HAMMERJACK’s (also in Baltimore).

I subsequently bought nearly EVERY album, either on LP, CD or both.

It was only until years later, my ex-lead guitarist and I actually met Biff and Paul on The Monsters of Rock Cruise … It was awesome to be able to tell them my favorite SAXON album is 1989’s much maligned “Destiny”! … Biff thought I was having a p*ss, as the Brits like to say, the equivalent of our expression, “Pulling my leg” … He pointed at Paul and said, “Blame him!”, (haha!!), to which Paul just shrugged, haha!!

Almost forgot to mention (though I may have told this story here before), the night before meeting them, Beavis and I (I mean, my ex-lead guitarist and I) caught the first of the two shows they played on the cruise, this one performed on the upper deck, one night, POINT BLANK, (naturally) … I was SO stoked! … I was so psyched and hopeful they would play some tracks off “Destiny”, I wore my black hoodie adorned with a “Destiny” patch on the right sleeve.

Just as the show started, a mysterious and beautiful, yet tomboy-ish, redhead in a tank top and track shorts appeared next to me … Much to my astonishment, she knew EVERY word coming out of Biff’s mouth as she sang along with him! … I was so blown away by this, I gave her my “Destiny” emblazoned black hoodie, figuring anyone who knew every word, deserved it.

The next night, Beavis and I were in our POINT BLANK positions dead center stage in the main theater of the ship for what would be SAXON’s last performance of the cruise … I secretly wondered if I would ever see my “Saxon Redhead” again … Would it be “Destiny”? … Then, just as SAXON broke into their fantastic cover of Christopher Cross’ “Ride Like The Wind” (from “Destiny”), I felt a tap on my shoulder … I turned around and, lo and behold, there she was! … “Destiny” had brought us together again! … Only, this time, she looked even more gorgeous, all Glammed up and gorgeous … Even her hair was all styled like Farrah Faucet! … She gave me a big hug and then put her arm around me and I put mine around hers, as we faced the music, POINT BLANK, together!

At the conclusion of the song, my dream was over as she proceeded to kiss me on the cheek and whispered something in my ear to this day I don’t know, and disappeared … Well, not really … She returned to the clutches of her boyfriend, who I was pleasantly surprised to see was cool about the whole thing.

The next day, Beavis and I checked out Femme Fatale, who were part of the line-up playing during the day on the upper deck … Holy Metal, I couldn’t believe my eyes AND ears! … There was my SAXON Soulmate up on stage, cavorting right alongside Lorraine Lewis, cranking away on electric guitar!

After pushing my eyes back in my head, I was shocked to see, my “Metal Girl” was actually the lead guitarist of Femme Fatale and, only later that night, did I discover, the lead guitarist of IRON MAIDENS, the one and only “Courtney Cox”!

That night, Beavis and I had the pleasure of having a few drinks with Ms. Cox and her boyfriend, though I wish I could take his back, since he is the boyfriend who notoriously punched her in the face during a well publicized (TMZ, Blabbermouth, etc.) domestic violence incident!

p.s. HIM!, needless to say, I never mentioned what I really think of Iron Maiden, haha!!

You are on a roll, Metalboy! Please don't stop. This site needs these sorts of stories from you and others. That tale was a classic!

PS: And you have never, to my recollection, mentioned what you think of Maiden's song "Reach Out," or whether or not you like their earlier albums with Paul. Pestering minds want to know!
