Concert Attendance Before Being a Fan?

Ever go see a band without really knowing any of their tunes?

Last night I saw Uriah Heep. I'd checked them out on YouTube but don't really own their records. The concert was just $5 and across the street from my house. I went with some friends.

It is weird going to shows when you don't know the lyrics to every song. I'd say 90% of the time, I know every single song performed when I see a band live. That's probably because I'm only paying to see bands I really like, yes? Festivals are the anomaly of course. There are plenty of bands at fests I'll "study for" in advance and still not know songs. Then there are those rare instances when I wasn't really a fan to begin with and seeing the act live completely converts me. During those magical instances, I'll rush home, buy every album and become obsessed.

Question today: which glam band did you see live without really being a fan and were completley flipped during the course of the concert?

Mine, hands down, was Kix. I was just a casual fan before seeing them live. But now, WOW, they are so good its sick.

Poison. I saw them because I wanted to see Cinderella. Tom's voice was shot at the time, and they were a disappointment ( they were awesome at M3, however ). Poison, I'd always thought were OK, but seeing the show they put on, and hearing the songs live, I ended up liking them a whole lot more than I had before. There were other bands that I had the same experience with, Clutch springs to mind, going to festivals, you always have a chance to hear bands that you have never really listened to much. Winger sucked. Skid Row without Bach were great, but so was Seb by himself. Rose Tattoo were great. Triumph were a disaster. It's a mixed bag, but that's what I like about festivals, the chance to give some bands more of a shot than I have before.

Went to check out Wednesday 13 (Murderdolls) at a small club in Boston cause my friend had some free tickets..this band that opened,69 EYES Fuckin BROUGHT IT!.,,drummer was unreal,all visual kinda like Tommy Lee in the day. I was so impressed I went out and bought a few cd's the next day,'Devils' being my favorite. I think,judging from the earlier cd's there tried to be a glam band,but didn't have the right stuff. The image and sound now is that of Ministry meets Lords of the New Church meets The Cult..check em out!

TNT!!! I had never heard of them and caught them as an opening act, they blew me away.

Little Caesar, immediately bought the cd the next week. AWESOME live. I had no idea when they opened for KISS.

I saw Uriah Heep open for Motley Crue 1984-04-30...City Auditorium, Colorado Springs, CO

I saw a "newer" band, Cinder Road open up for Telsa a few years ago. I was blown away and have since become a huge fan. They are like Nickelback meets Glam. New school meets old school...

Skid Row opened for Motley Crue in '89 and blew them off stage. Great gig by a band I hadn't heard at the time.

Oh, recently, it was Zombie. I went to Soundwave, caught a side show at the last minute and was blown away. I had seen him from a distance at ROTR, but being right close was a whole different experience, and I bought all the CDs the next day.

I agree with Kenny Oz.....KIX, KIX, KIX. I was a casual fan until I saw em live in 2008. Mega fan ever since!!!
Another band was Scorpions, who just blew me away live and I can't believe I never got it until last summer....

Probably WASP, who was a last-minute replacement for Black 'N Blue opening for KISS in 1986 in FL. KISS was amazing, but I was so impressed with the intensity and insanity of WASP, that I went out the next afternoon and bought The Last Command cassette - LOL.

In addition, finally got to see Black 'N Blue 22 years later!

Lillian Axe saw the video on the Headbangers Ball for Dream of a Lifetime. I was in Portland for the Rose Festival two weeks later and they were opening for Krokus in a club. I spent all of my money on the show. Got there earley met their roadie who was really cool Lillian Axe tore the stage up and I was a fan for life!

Hardcore Superstar,just a few weeks ago at Sweden Rock Fest - they were amazing! And it was totally unexpected, cause my brother have seen them before and he'd told me that they suck live... I don't know which planet he's on, cause they fucking brought it!

i saved for months to see motley this year. i didnt know five poison songs. after the show. i borowed all my dads poison albums, then went out and bought them. huge fan now huge fan
