Seriously, I think these guys are talented (esp. Shennan). But, like a lot of "somewhat super" groups, something is missing for me. And that is on me.
Personally, I would rather see Mr. Big. And that says a lot. Or, better yet, I would rather see EEaS-era DLR finally get back together. It wouldn't be as good as the old days. But, boy oh boy, wasn't that an amazing time?
The "something missing" is the sound concept of who they are but worse still, their songs, or lack thereof. They smack of b.s., or in their case, shall I say, "d.s."
p.s. Let alone their lack of songs or one of the most UNROCK and arrogant names for a "Rock" band I've ever heard, the group is harboring a KILLER and I don't mean in a good way. I view Billy Sheehan as an accessory to countless murders that can be attributed to The Church of Scientology, a phony religious group with a long track record of killing and torturing people. And Sheehan, a top tier officer of that organization at the same level as Tom Cruise and John Travolta, is a promoter of death and torture. I wonder if he's brainwashed Kotzen and Portannoy yet. I don't know how they live with themselves playing alongside a MURDERER!!!

And just a couple of observations on the Scientology angle (which I think I introduced you to a year or so ago). I don't really think that Shennan qualifies as being in the same league as either Cruise or Travolta, nor do I believe he gets the same rights of access as those two. Most of the Celebrity Centre Scientologist actually don't "move up the bridge" and/or involve themselves with the upper level doctrines regarding Xenu, etc. They get perks, yes, as they were a group that Hubbard started targeting very early on. But they provide a veneer of prestige that is used to hook the more rank-and-file members. From what I can gather, Sheenan is OTII, whereas Cruise is OTVI and Travolta is OTII. They certainly aren't being placed in The Hole or being made to sign on to the Sea Org.
Of those three, it is really Cruise that should answer for his involvement and his relationship to David Miscavige. The amount of documented largesse he has received implicates him in a way that makes his case unique. And, when it comes to other celebrities who are involved (say, the Chick Coreas or Greta Van Susterens), I think a bit of "let he who is without sin" is in order. As John Atack (I recommend his works to anyone interested in Scientology, esp. _A Piece of Blue Sky_ and his occasional postings on _The Underground Bunker_) has pointed out, the level of processing necessary to disentangle one's self from a group like Scientology is substantial. And shouting down members as murderers does little to actually invoke change. If anything, it can reinforce the resolve to remain (see: Shennan, Beck, the Mastersons, Jason Lee, and others).
Sure, the policies of disconnection and fair game are awful and have hurt countless people. The death of Lisa McPherson is a tragedy. But the best strategy is when those with knowledge of the group--the Mike Rinders, Leah Reminins, and Jenna and Ron Miscaviges--speak truth to the power structure that exists in the organization. That, alongside a dose of understanding of the sort that Atack provides, is probably the best we can hope for in the near term. In the longer term, the organization itself is doing an amazing job of tearing itself apart from the inside, suggesting that rot at the heart of a group---good or bad, religious or otherwise--is the thing that most likely topples it.
People may claim that counter-groups like Anonymous, or Operation Clambake, or even The Underground Bunker, are responsible. I sorta' doubt that. Yes, they have added a level of exposure that Scientology never experienced in the pre-Internet era. But they also oftentimes are merely the court reporters for Nero's fiddles, nudging along the obvious and internal machination of a group that destroys itself as it paradoxically tries to hide in plain sight.
Because belonging is condoning and that's what Sheehan is doing. I could care less if he's going to dig his heels in. It's quicksand he's digging into.
And I wouldn't be surprised if he's s*cked Kotzen and Portannoy into it and the whole Winery Dogs thing isn't underwritten by Scientology to begin with.
Delineating Scientology down to murder and torture (it does) is equating Catholicism to murder and torture (it does). People can easily and readily see it and accept it in others, but can't ever point the finger at him/herself.
Everybody needs a little place they can hide
Somewhere to call their own
Don't let nobody inside
Every now and then we all need to let go
For some it's a doctor, for me it's rock and roll
For some it's a bottle
For some it's a pill
Some people read the Bible cause it's givin' them a thrill
I was one to figure if they don't like what they see
If you live in a glass house don't be throwing rocks at me
And, this to me, is a form of torture on many levels:

But I will leave this topic alone now that I have said my peace. Back to the music . . .
. . . nice re: Shennan's DLR comments, Fletch.
Granted, the Catholic Church has a lot of f*ck ups throughout history from horrible genocide at the beginning to the unforgivable sins against children by their priests in the present. Only now are they being held accountable, something, eerily, Scientology has not.
You saw the acclaimed "Going Clear" and you've recommended it to others here, as well. I suggest you watch it again and then explain to me again why in h*ll idiot extraordinaire Billy Sheehan or any of the others you mention should be members. There are other ways of finding personal solace and peace than helping to perpetuate the myth of a killing machine.
Just because it makes Sheehan or any of these other creepy a*sclowns to have a false sense of spirituality and communion and live in denial of what goes on behind the facade which they inhabit doesn't make it right.
The fact that you're willing to overlook the death, starvation and brainwashing of the system that keeps the Scientology machine going for the sake of the lame reputation of a B-Player in Rockdom is to condone it.
To me, there isn't much difference. Just because something is "long-established" and a tradition, doesn't make it right. And, you want to talk about tax shelters? The Catholic Church is thee largest tax haven.
I am not going to (and never have) begrudged anyone for finding comfort and peace in religion. But, I do detest when I'm told I'm "wrong" or "going to hell", etc...because I don't adhere to conventional theology. If I am going to throw stones at Billy Sheehan, then I should be able to throw stones at most of my family, friends and acquaintances for their beliefs (which, contrary to popular opinion, I don't). I suggest other outlooks in life. Some people use religion, some use rock and roll. In a very real sense, I was brainwashed into Catholicism perhaps as much as people in Scientology.
I remember "confessing" that I sometimes forgot to say my nightly prayers on my knees, because I was taught (brainwashed) by some nuns that if I did not say my nightly prayers on my knees, I would wake up crippled. Also, the Pastor of our Church would chastise the people who did not show up every week as mortal sinners; not venial sinners, not Cardinal sinners, but claim from the pulpit that purposely missing mass is a mortal sin and those who miss are going to Hell.
I thought I was in Hell listening to this crock.
Thus, everyone's favorite son, the phony hack overplayer he is, Billy Sheehan, can also add "KILLER" to his résumé for continuing to recruit gullible fans and possibly bandmembers or members of the musician community into Scientology.
May the Metal Gods save us from these False Prophet Killers of Doom!
I gotta quote MB: HAHAHAHAHAHA! Have you forgotten their systematic raping of thousands of children, which is probably still going on in current society. Or haven't you been reading the dialy headlines for the past 10 years. And, the Muslim religion- another established religion, in some sects, still promotes honor killing, honor rape, stoning and whipping.
And, Unfortunately, Scientology, in a few hundred years will no longer be considered a "modern' religion. L. Ron Hubbard certainly pulled the wool over the government's eyes and was able to get his cult certified as a non-profit, tax-exempt religion (as many other false prophets were able to do), but hopefully, perhaps even under future-President Clinton, the AG's office will take a hard look at this vilifiable religion and sweeping changes will come.
One can sleep, perchance to dream.
Confront v. narconon v. affinity v. reading specialists v.
oh, Wikipedia describes narconon as f*cked up. got it!
This is about as*wipe Sheehan is an active and devoted high-level member of an organization that poses as a religion that KILLS, tortures incarcerates AND starves their members!
For this alone, he is a HORRIBLE human being, regardless of his crappy Prog-UNROCK overplaying.
If you interpret what I wrote as granting permission for or lending support to any of the acts you (or I) described, you are slapping at a man of straw. Because that isn't me, nor is it what I wrote. And I think you know that.
But, if venting lends purpose to your prose, so be it. Because the person who condones acts of violence isn't me. And the person wanting to get into a theological discussion isn't me either. Offering context is far different from condoning something . . .both in the sources I referenced and in the details I provided.
I always love your passion, Metalboy! But you misfired when you called me out. Again, I think you know that. Bummer that you couldn't have directed your ire elsewhere.
Sheehan doesn't get a pass and he can go straight to h*ll on a flaming flexible flyer with Miscavage, Cruise, Beck, Revolta and all the rest of their misguided syphers! If you want to climb on board with them, don't let me stop you!
