Whitesnake To Release 30th Anniversary Edition of '1987' - New Trailer

Whitesnake will release a special 30th anniversary package of their self-titled album, also known as 1987. The trailer for that special package is below. It will be called Whitesnake: Super Deluxe Edition and will be available October 6 via Rhino.

As a 4 CD/DVD combo, this package will feature a lot of music for the $50 asking price. There will also be music videos, previously unreleased concert footage, interviews and the like.

I just hopped over to Amazon and you can pre-order now on that site for $44. There is also an anniversary vinyl issue of the album only going for $27.

The live material on this looks to be a full setlist from one of their opening slots they did with the Crue before they went out on their own tour. I saw the tour, it was a wonderful show. One of the stand-out memories was seeing Adrian Vandenberg play for Whitesnake. He was one of my favorite guitarists at the time. If you've never heard the self titled Vandenberg record, please go check it out. It is one of the gems from the early eighties. I'd love to have seen John Sykes play the tour as well but I suppose he and Coverdale had such a falling out that they can't find a way to re-unite to this day, 30 years later.

Agreed, Vandenberg is/was awesome. I saw Whitesnake on a double bill with Bad English back in the day. awesome show by both bands. As for the 1987 album, I loved Still of the Night and Bad boys, but that's about it. The rest of it is overly-polished pop metal, and so far from their hard blues rock beginnings that I can't stomach it. they completely ruined Here I go again on the album, and then destroyed it even more with the radio single version. I am so glad Deep Purple reunited so that Jon Lord had a place to go where his talents were used to their fullest; unlike in Whitesnake where his contributions to the Slide It In record were all removed from the American version of the album.

Bob, I didn't realize Jon Lord was ever on the Slide It In record. Is there a version of the record out there with Jon on it. I'd like to hear it. I didn't get into their bluesy beginnings until later on and I agree, far superior to their polished late eighties stuff. I do still play the Slide It In and the 87' s/t album from time to time. I may break out the Slide It In and Live..In the Heart of the City records today. Cheers .By the way, what do you think of Adrian V.'s new group.

JCD, the UK version of Slide It In has Jon Lord on it. It is a very different album than the one that came out in America. Many of the original guitar solos were re-recorded, and Jon Lord's organ solo in Hungry for Love was completely removed. Not only that, but a bunch of echo was added to Cozy Powell's drum tracks so his drums sound way different. ON the original UK version of the song slide It IN, cozy Powell's bass drum is so heavy that it nearly shakes the speakers. all of that sound was removed in the American version.

Whoa, guys! Killer info on your part, gents! I totally missed out on Whitesnake live and the fact that you guys saw 'me when you did just makes me evil jealous.

At least I managed to pull off the following:

Turns out way back in 2001 (geez, when did that wind up being a long time ago?), I lived in London for 2 months. Before I left, I made the rounds of all the top indy record stores where I bought a bunch of CDs, DVDs and VHS' (PAL format I still have yet to convert).

Coincidentally, the motherload of which is primarily Whitesnake, Deep Purple and SAXON stuff, as well as a handful of other NWOBHM items, such as a picture sleeve 45 of "Love Potion #9" by Tygers of Pantang, among others, plus some Punk stuff I never see over here.

Among the VHS material, I scored the entire Deep Purple (with Coverdale on lead vocals) and Black Sabbath sets from Cal Jam '74. The Deep Purple set is notable for Blackmore setting destroying his guitars and amps (causing a few to explode) and throwing them in the audience. audience. The show was originally broadcast on ABC, which I recall watching, and the video is that footage sans the commercials, thankfully.

One of the other videos is a complete "Slide It In" era Whitesnake concert. Another video I grabbed in London is a killer show of Oliver/Dawson Saxon. As you probably know, they are the other guitarist (not Paul Quinn) and the original bass player of Saxon, who went out on their own after the "Destiny" album failed to get traction in the states, despite possessing their KILLER cover of Christopher Cross' "Ride Like The Wind".

Back on topic, I also got an original British 1st press of "Slide It In" on CD!

Anywho, count me in for the 30th Edition of "1987"! Why?! Because of the description -- a DVD and CD, both featuring previously unreleased material, unlike Crüe's uninspired anniversary release of "Girls, Girls, Girls".

p.s. F.Y.I. I have both the original presses of "1987" and Vandenberg's solo album (great logo on the cover of the latter, not that both Whitesnake's logos aren't cool, either.) on both LP and CD. I also picked up an original British 1st press of the "Live in The Heart of The City" album when I was over there. And, look, I hear you, Bob, regarding the Pop Metal aspects of "1987", but if you adopt the point of view Jimmy Page is rumored to have upon hearing "Still of the Night", you can be metaphorically rolling on the floor laughing as he apparently literally did at the time. My favorite cut after "Still of the Night" is "Children of the Night", a complete "Hair Metal" formula throwaway -- but THAT's exactly what I love about it! Whatever we may think of that song, it just flat out rocks, so much so, I actually convinced my friend to work it up with his cover band and let me sing it with them in 1988!

Bob, I'm going to have track down A UK pressing of Slide It In. It's added to an active list I keep on my phone of music I look for when I'm anywhere that sells music. Talk about a band that had a great history of drummers... Ian Paice, Cozy Powell and Tommy Aldridge. WOW!

Metalboy, even though the Whitesnake record is overly polished, I still love it. What music wasn't over produced in the late 80's. Thinking back, 1987 was a fantastic year for music releases. Hysteria, Girls/Crue, Whitesnake, Tribute/ Ozzy and Randy, Frehley's Comet, Appetite For Destruction, Once Bitten/Great White, Permanent Vacation, Contagious/Y&T, Crazy Nights/KISS, Visual Lies/Lizzy Borden, Perfect Timing/MSG, Back for the Attack/Dokken, Faster Pussycat, Pride/White Lion, Bad Animals/Heart, Big Life/Night Ranger. Holy Crap!! That's just the releases that would pertain to this site. I have to admit, I had to Wiki 1987 releases because I knew a couple were escaping my memory. What a prolific year for music. I can't recall a bigger year for me musically than 87'. I still own every album from that list sans Faster Pussycat, never got into them.

JCD ... Agree, completely about the overproduced stuff ... I happen to love it also! You named one people don't mention often but is one of my favorites -- Lizzy Borden, "Visual Lies"!!! with the track, "Me Against The World" the standout for me!

Along the same lines, another overproduced gem many either overlook or dismisses, is one I also mentioned earlier, Saxon, "Destiny". Also, 1985's "Metal Heart" from Accept, is another overpolished (for the better!) example of excellent Metal! And that's just the stuff people have heard of!

The Lizzy Borden was one of my favorites of that year. Still love it. The Crusader record from Saxon was pretty polished as well, Wheels of Steel and Power and the Glory were awesome. I saw them on the Power and Glory tour with Fastway, opened for Maiden and they were as good if not better than Maiden.. Accept were a band that could use some production, I'll have to re-visit the Metal Heart record. I saw Accept on the Russian Roulette tour opening for Dio. I couldn't decipher a word Udo sang but the band was awesome.

Metalboy you once asked what we listened to on the water and in early 1987 it was this Whitesnake album. I probably told the story before but one of the guys on the boat, his sister was either married to Hugh Syme or he was a cousin or something. Hugh was doing the album artwork and slipped this guy a copy so we had it way before it came out LOL. Coincidentally Hugh Syme actually spent a day on the boat for a dependents day cruise.
