Sonic Temple Festival Announced

The Sonic Temple Festival will replace Rock on the Range. The inaugural Sonic Temple lineup is very strong (see below). The festival is set for the weekend of May 17 in Columbus, Ohio. Tickets are on sale November 30 at noon (ET). I expect this festival to sell out quickly. Rock on the Range was always an easy sell-out and the headliners are better for this one than most years of ROTR.

The transformation of Rock On The Range to this marks “The Inevitable Death of Hair Metal”.

How ironic that the band the promoters copped the new name from, The Cult, is in the third tier of headliners.

The Struts should easily be ahead of all the bands on the 2nd tier of this poster. Saw them twice and they are legit fun

This year will be my 6th time going to the festival and it's always a great time, and there are always lots of great bands. I'd love a bit more 80's flair in the mix, but that's never been their thing

Foo Fighters alone could prolly sell this out. Throw in Ghost,Halestorm,Joan Jett, and The Cult and you've definitely got this old chubby dudes attention. Lol

Ditto, Gary, plus a The Struts, minus Foo Fighters — Grohl’s a screamer and not in a good way. It’s an annoying way.

Wimmer knows the market. He knows how to package these sorts of things (even if he whiffed on his Houston Open Air idea . . . did you consider the weather?!?!).

And there are some great bands. And some really good bands.

But I think it is time to call a TOD (time of death) on the glorious and short revival of glam and metal festivals in America. Other countries? Life support.

This isn't me yelling at a paper bag as it floats past me. And it isn't me getting angry that the right of way has to be yielded to a new set of fresh and not-so-fresh faces with money to spend.

It's just me noting what was inevitable: a metal heavy festival line-up is no longer possible on several fronts. And those festivals that haven't adapted will fail. It is something akin to how I felt when I went to the Ozzfest back in the day and Crazy Town were playing. I was a bit confused. "Butterfly"?

Again, not complaining. It is just a case of feeling old in at least two different decades. Have fun all who attend. This will be a great time (again, Wimmer knows his stuff). But it isn't something that was designed for me. And, on some level, that changing of the guard does sting a little. But that is on me.
