100 Greatest 60s Rock Songs

Another day, another Amazon playlist.

I was in the mood for something a little older, so I went for “100 Greatest 60s Rock Songs.”

This is my old stomping grounds.

I cut my teeth on sixties rock. My mom loved her music growing up, so we had lots of 45s and cassettes of many of the most famous songs from the summer of love.

I have to say, the 100 Greatest ’60s Rock Songs playlist is excellent. It includes some of the best music ever recorded. Many of the folks on the playlist are in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame too.

Some of my favorite songs on the playlist include “House of the Rising Sun” by the Animals, “My Generation” from The Who and “Good Times Bad Times” from Led Zeppelin. One of my favorite songs of all time, “California Dreamin’” by the Mamas and the Pappas is here as is the hit “Sunshine of You Love” by Cream. Another absolute favorite of mine is “Time of the Season” by the Zombies. The first time I heard that song, I was probably 12 or so. I went wild for it. I still do.

The best song the Rolling Stones ever recorded, “Paint It Black” is here. So is “Smoke on the Water” by Deep Purple and The Beach Boys masterpiece “God Only Knows,” which is perhaps the most significant pop song ever recorded, save for maybe “Imagine” by John Lennon.

But what about the Beatles you say? Don’t worry, there’s heaps of the Fab Four on this playlist, including tracks from A Hard Day’s Night (which was my first Beatles CD), “She Loves You, “Hey Jude” and more. Enjoy.

A lot of great songs on this for sure. Loads actually.

As a kid, I listened to tons of Beatles music. Older brother and sister were fanatics so pretty much the only vinyl at home was Beatles records. I listened to Beatles pretty much exclusively until I was able to get my own vinyl, with a bit of Stones mixed in now and then.

Not a lot of other kids were into the Beatles when I was growing up. I remember a fight with a kid in class about music. He was defending KISS as the greatest band in the history of music and I was defending the Beatles. He told me " Beatles ha. What have they ever done???".

I still laugh about that as I realize that was one of the first of many arguments I have had with boys about music.

Friends house who went by the name of Troy, but we all called him Toad. Loved, loved the whole headbanger's ball scene when it came out. He was like a fat kid to cake when it came to all the videos of that time. In fact, one of our school pictures, he's actually in a guns n roses white mesh (ala Bret Michaels style) cowboy hat for his official picture. Love It !

Piggybacking on Rita's Beatles argument, his parents would always turn up the Beatles louder than the music Toad was jamming on his side of the house when I would visit. Epic fights of basically saying GnR, Metallica, Motley, etc... were all better than the Beatles. Oh it makes me laugh and smile thinking of those back and forth banters. I actually despised the Beatles for awhile, but then you discover them for yourself and realize how amazing they were. Parents can be right :)

"Smoke on the Water" is from 1972, but whatever. :) to me, 1967 was the year when the genre we know as rock, (Not rock 'n' roll), but rock, came into its own. it was the first year that albums outsold singles in America, and it was the year that underground FM rock stations started springing up around the country. It seemed like a new ground-breaking album was coming out every couple of weeks that year, and for the next few years after that. Definitely an amazing time for rock music.

Rita & the others with an appreciation for The Beatles ...

The Beatles were (and still are) THE Greatest Rock & Roll Band Of All Time!

But don’t take it from me, ask our very own Ozzy Osbourne, who is the #1 Collector of Beatles Memorabilia & Vinyl in The World!

Yeah, thats definitely an opinion. How long were they even together as a band? How many true releases did they have, as a full band? Gimme the Stones all day long as the GOATs, though, and twice on sundays! But you're most definitely welcome to that opinion!
