I'll Pass - But This Is Something At Least

Doro held a "drive-in" concert in her homeland of Germany yesterday. She shared a little clip on Twitter. I know bands are trying inventive things during the pandemic and Live Nation wants to get ticket money any way possible, but going to a concert and sitting in the car just does not seem appealing to me. Also, what is the point if everyone gets out of their cars and then clumps together? Why not just have the show outside in a shed like normal?

All that said, I am bored to death with not much happening because of COVID-19 so I can see people being interested in any chance to see a live show.

I dug that one of the first cars you see is a classic VW Beetle. Made me smile.

Personally, I enjoyed her acoustic set at the empty amphitheater a few weeks back more than this. Let me explain. It was cool to hear her and a guitarist do those songs and to see such a starkly empty (and beautiful) venue. This was better sonically. But it wasn't really social distancing. So I am right back where Allyson was/is: what's the point of encouraging it if even the events that are supposed to promote it don't do so? Ugh.

Still, I think the drive-in concept has some merit (a la TRHPS in movie theaters). Imagine Spinal Tap playing along to their movie? Or Alice along to "He's Back (The Man Behind the Mask)"? Better yet, Alice in Chains playing live while the videos/movie they released for Rainer Fog are on the screen behind them? Floyd? Well, obviously . . . but it won't happen.

And that's the thing. To pull it off you need two things: (1) a band with some money; and (2) fans who will sit in their cars or stand in their allotted spaces. That isn't likely, nor does it capture the feeling that so many of want to experience right now. The true experience that we want, as Randy Blythe (who I don't normally applaud) pointed out last month, ain't going to happen while we still need to keep some space and wear face masks.

I like the concept for all the obvious treasons discussed ad infinitum here and in the multitude of articles on the topic ...

I would TOTALLY sit in my car drive-in style to watch a band live.

But it all comes down to the car ...

Imagine watching one of our heroes (Crüe, anyone?) in a 1967 Lincoln Continental convertible with the infamous suicide doors ...

The thing literally feels like a large roving living room. Perfect for a double date, so big you can practice social distancing if it’s a double first date, haha!!

Of course, there are plenty of other options which aren’t quite as pricey but would still run you some K ... 1969 Chrysler 300 Convertible, 1970 Cadillac Coupe DeVille Convertible, 1968 Chevy Caprice Convertible (specify the hidden headlights on the latter) and the list goes on and on ...

I’m headed to eBay now! ... It’s time to ROCK!

My drive in concert was a bit different than the one shown here. Mine was obviously not Doro.

Mine was more like the pic shown here: https://driftlessmusicgardens.com/

Metalboy!, at first I thought you were about to laud the prowess of a Chrysler K-Car (I was reading too fast) . . . that would have been treason-ous! But I dig your idea. It is how you roll that impacts how you enjoy rock n' roll, at the drive-in and elsewhere.

Glad you posted more info, GNR. I had asked about the event after you first mentioned it. Looks like it could be a great time. Lovely location as well.

The bigger the convertible, the more built-in social distancing from people walking by to get their popcorn AND more room to maneuver while inside the vehicle, for more or less social distancing depending on the situation, haha!!

I speak with some knowledge on the topic as I’ve owned several large convertibles over the years (since sold) like the aforementioned ‘69 Gold Chrysler 300 convertible with a 440 TNT engine, a ‘76 White fuel injected Cadillac Eldorado convertible with red leather and the standard 500 cube engine and a White ‘66 Cadillac DeVille with red leather, all of which I occasionally drove standing up sometimes up to speeds of 90+ miles per hour, Robert Plant hair circa “In Through the Out Door” blowing back like the Maxell guy, the Eldorado while blaring you name it, from AC/DC to Zeppelin in the 8 track, until I turned 40 and realized driving standing up may not be the brightest idea, funny in the movie, “It’s a Mad, Mad, Mad World” but not so funny, though it would look pretty cool before it crashed, watching one of these beasts going down the road driverless.

Metalboy!, you mentioned my dad's favorite movie! A classic. Made me smile.

I defer to you on all things auto-metal-music-cruising-related. But I still want you to win the lottery so you can buy that Glam Tank to drive us to the next live concert!
