'The Final Countdown' - Metallica Style

Metallica are on tour right now. During the shows, the band apparently messes around with a classic song outside their general style. The other day, Robert Trujillo and Kirk Hammett played "The Final Countdown." Of course, Europe made the song a hit in 1986. The Metallica version was performed while the band was in Stockholm, Sweden.

In the YouTube comments, people are freaking out about the cover not being "good." I'm not sure that was the point. This was just two guys having some fun with their fans. It's clear this wasn't rehearsed much if at all. Not everything has to be perfect.

Wow... Metallica covering Europe. I know they jumped the shark long ago, but this is taking it to a whole new level! What a joke. Lol

@Bk. Just wait for their cover of Mambo #5. I hear it’s a real barn burner...

I don't think it was that bad at all really ... and it makes sense given they were in Sweden where Europe (the band) is from. Will be interesting to see if covering a band from the country they are playing in is going to be something regular on this tour or not.

They did A Ha’s Take On Me recently as well.

Keep in mind it’s Robert and Kirk messing around while Lars and James hydrate. Wouldn’t call these diddy’s Metallica at all.

Well Kixchix you are 100% right. I just looked that up and that was in Norway, and A-Ha is from Norway, so there is something to this. Their next stop is Finland, so they can either cover Stratovarius or Lordy!

Thanks, Kixchix, for pointing out the obvious: these are goofs while 'Het and Lars go off stage and form a "hug circle." Crowds seem to love it. They paid for it. Good for all involved.

Hear hear Him!! Better than a 15 minute bass solo

Personally I'd rather hear a Metallica song... but call me crazy I guess? I'm just not a big fan of solos.

Harmless fun. Why are people so uptight?

War pigs
Radar love
And many more on youtube. Watched them last week.Wish they would do Send Me Your Money from Suicidal Tendencies days.

TheCheapSeats gets it right ... It’s a goof.

Where is your sense of humor, boyz? ... They are just having a little fun with the audience, playing off the country they are in while Hetfield and a*sclown Ulrich hydrate backstage, as Steverox and KixChix point out. It’s paying homage in a lighthearted way, or shall we say “heavy” way.

Personally, I like their treatment ... Imagine how great it would sound with Hetfield and Ulrich. Trouble is, you’d never get Hetfield to do it. He’s only in for bada*s covers, their best being Queen’s “Stone Cold Crazy”, which is actually Metallica’s best song, as it’s vastly superior to anything they've ever written themselves.

p.s. The saw Sabaton, the Swedish Power Metal (I think that’s what they are) open for Accept in Orlando a few years back. Before they took the stage, they had “The Final Countdown” cranked up to 11. It was really quite hilarious, since Sabaton is quite the opposite of that genre of poodle AOR.

So. They did frickin’ Dancing Queen last night in Stockholm.Folks, I get it’s a time killer and all in fun. (Maybe next time in Canada they could knock out some Justin Bieber?)

But I’m sticking with Bk in that they have tons of great songs of their own they rarely if ever play. If I want to hear ABBA, I’ll take the proverbial gas pipe and head to Hell, where they’re no doubt on a permanent loop at 140 decibels along with “the Biebs”... Lol

Wow -- lots of shade being thrown for what is just a bunch of goofing around.

I'm seeing them in Buffalo this October - maybe they'll bust out some Goo Goo Dolls.

Thanks Gary, I mean I know this is a glam site and most ppl on here probably think Metallica's black album is their magnum opus but it ain't. Metallica is supposed to be a thrash metal band, not some cover band for some of the weakest songs ever recorded. Btw, I have a great sense of humor, it's just that I don't pay over $200 per ticket, to see one of my favorite metal bands play one hit wonders, like the final frickin countdown. Lol

I saw ‘em in Orlando last year, BK ... TOTALLY KILLER and worth the money if it’s general admission in a stadium ... Ya just bust your way up front and violá, it’s like you’re in a POINT BLANK VIP position!

I had a feeling they might break out “ABBA” ... Yeah, it’s a goof also making fun of these songs by pouring molten Metal all over them to great effect!

I've seen em 9 times but I've never seen them do any gay covers like this. Not that there's anything wrong with being gay. Lol

Yeah, just ask Halford!
