News Of The Week Roundup: Week 21, 2021

The news of the week was basically a mixed bag of nothing too revolutionary, which is pretty common around a major holiday. The biggest thing for me was the Friends reunion finally happened, thanks to HBO Max. I genuinely had a lot of fun watching the cast back together again.
Of course, The Onion has a hot take:

“Friends: The Reunion” is arriving on HBO Max on Thursday. "This special is the superexpressway of memory lanes," writes @poniewozik. It "is better when it gets out of the cast’s way and shows us what drew us to them, and them to each other." https://t.co/ntQmHyPuZu

Still not convinced you should get a COVID-19 vaccine? There are plenty more prizes and freebies awaiting those who are on the fence. Now Super Bowl tickets are on the table!

A lot of folks (myself included) wanted to get vaccinated to make travel safe and easy again. It seems people have forgotten how to comport themselves with decorum after lockdown and are now acting like literal fools in the friendly skies. People are behaving so badly on planes that both American Airlines and Southwest are not bringing back alcohol onboard until at least mid-September. An unruly nut on a Southwest flight even attacked a flight attendant, knocking out two of her teeth.
American Airlines has joined Southwest Airlines in suspending alcohol services on flights, the airline said. The decision follows a recent assault of a Southwest flight attendant that resulted in a serious injury. https://t.co/BRlAceH0Nz

Another week, more mass shootings in America. I mean, it's sad that it is so hard to keep track. There was a bad one in Florida just overnight.

A shooting at the VTA facility in San Jose, California left 9 dead and many wounded, too.

The Republican party has blocked a bipartisan commission to investigate the January 6 insurrection. This is political malpractice. The investigation will likely now happen via a select committee.
BREAKING: Senate Republicans have blocked the creation of a bipartisan panel to study the Jan. 6 attack on the Capitol. The Senate fell sort of the 60 votes needed to consider a House-passed bill that would have formed a 10-member commission. https://t.co/YtpnjyysBz

Brian Sicknick was one of the on-duty officers badly outnumbered by the mob who stormed the U.S. Capitol building on January 6.

Mega-corporations swallow other, older, mega-corporations.
Listless 'specials' that prop up streaming services with content that almost always is less than the original (how could it not be? UNAGI!!!!). Remember when the idea was that it would cost less to get more TV in this glorious age of un-tethered viewing? Well, there are A LOT more tethers. And when The Onion is slinging barbs with all the sharpness of a butter knife, you know something is amiss.
People shooting each other. Are there emotions that go beyond sad and angry? When the norm means people die senselessly, we need to try and figure out some other sort of norm.
Other people acting like dolts while flying in metal tubes, while people are shooting each other. I don't quite recall the clause in the Constitution that protects the right to be a buffoon.
Elected officials dodging questions (not a political statement; more of a statement that barely bares repeating in the past several decades).
Turning a medical issue into a game with, you know, cash and prizes and maybe a guest spot on a new A&E special!!!!
And, I got vaccinated without the chance of winning a prize to encourage me. Yay for me. Hope to travel soon and in short, live again, go to concerts... all that good stuff that has been gone for more than a year.
And how sad people keep getting shot down there.
Yay for kitties. That's a statement about cats :) It's not a typo.
And I really do hope you and I are out and about, enjoying music, in the near future!
