So Now You Can Be Part of 'Dog Camp'

I received this press release yesterday and figured some of you might be interested. The camp actually sounds pretty cool.

Mike Portnoy, Billy Sheehan and Richie Kotzen of The Winery Dogs have announced Dog Camp, their first annual immersive program for aspiring musicians of all ages and levels, set for July 21-25, 2014 at Full Moon Resort in Big Indian, NY.

Produced by Dreamcatcher Events, this special vacation experience offers the opportunity to get up close and personal with the three legends as campers attend instrument-specific clinics, learn songwriting mechanics, and enjoy very special intimate performances and jam sessions from The Winery Dogs and special guests.

Tickets for Dog Camp are on sale now at www.winerydogcamp.com. Attendees will have access to all workshops, seminars, gourmet meals, performances, jam sessions, and camp activities.

“We’ve all done clinics over the years, but it’s always been something that’s primarily centered around one instrument that each of us has typically done on an individual basis,” says drummer Portnoy. “Dog Camp is the first time that any of us have hosted or participated in a true ‘Band Camp.’ As a result of that, we’ve got some incredible surprises in store for everybody attending.”

“We’ll be living together, hanging together, and jamming together,” Portnoy continues. “We want you to ask as many questions as possible, and we’re going to engage you on a one-on-one basis to help you realize your goals as a player.”

“What's interesting is to talk about music, concepts, objectives, reasons why you're playing the instrument, what you want to achieve, and how to get to that point, rather than talking about major versus minor scales,” says lead vocalist/guitarist Kotzen. “I love that feeling of sharing concepts with people. In The Winery Dogs, we all have various experiences that a lot of other people don't have. It's an opportunity to share that and grow; the feeling of moving forward and learning and experiencing something new. That's what excites me about Dog Camp. It's the creative process and creativity that make me want to do music, and I want to share that."

"I want to emphasize that players should keep an eye on what we're doing and why during the performances," adds bassist Sheehan. "In between songs or mid-song, I want to stop to make a point about what's going on and why. The expertise of being able to play ensemble is a bit of a lost art with kids today. They don't do what we did when we were growing up. Right away, we just got in a band whether we could play or not. Now, kids want to get up to a level of expertise and then join a band."

“[During the seminars] I like to have back-and-forth communication,” Sheehan continues. “I want to speak with people and hear their opinions, disagreements, and challenges. I believe anyone who attends will see a jumpstart in their quest to achieve their dreams."

Dog Camp offers a variety of pricing options, based on the variety of available accommodations. All activities will be held at Full Moon Resort in Big Indian, NY, which features an eclectic array of comfortable, rustic country-inn accommodations as well as primitive tent camping. All accommodations are just steps away from daily camp activities. Guests can enjoy the spring-fed swimming pool, on-site access to the Esopus Creek, and explore the splendors of the Catskills on the nearby network of hiking trails. Dedicated to the celebration of nature, music and the arts, this one hundred-acre wonderland of mountains, fields, and streams is a world of its own.

Winger Premiere Video for 'Rat Race'

Winger will release Better Days Comin' on April 22. Now the band has put out the video for the single "Rat Race." Doesn't sound like typical Winger to me. What do you think?

Second Annual Rock Against MS Planned

HOLLYWOOD, CA (March 4, 2014) – 2ND ANNUAL ROCK AGAINST MS returns to the Whisky A Go-Go in Hollywood with yet another amazing All-Star line up. The 2nd Annual has the Rock Stars returning in support of long time friend and publicist, Nancy B. Sayle. This rock-fueled concert is to help raise awareness and funding for Sayle and her new foundation benefiting those living with MS.

Guitar Player Magazine is in the house to present Lita Ford their top award - Inspired by Chet Atkins’ phrase “Certified Guitar Player”—and typically bestowed at NAMM during Muriel Anderson’s All-Star Guitar Night—this award debuted in 2003 with Les Paul as the first recipient. Since then, GP has honored Duane Eddy, Nokie Edwards, Dick Dale, Larry Carlton, Tommy Emmanuel, Mike Stern, Lee Ritenour, Robben Ford, Joe Perry, and others. "Lita Ford slugged it out with the boys club in an era where female musicians who liked to rock hard had very few heroes," says GUITAR PLAYER Editor in Chief Michael Molenda. "But Lita was there, and man, did she cut a heroic figure. She was tough. She was smart. She could write a good song. And she could shred. Stinging bends. Fierce vibrato. A great sense of melody and phrasing. Since the Runaways in the late 1970s, and throughout her solo career, Lita has been a beacon of cool, and an inspiration for girls AND boys who want to express themselves through the guitar. She is the definition of a Certified Legend."

In its finishing stages, the ROCK AGAINST MS FOUNDATION will provide services from a three (3) grant resource system, which will provide daily care, quality of life needs and emergency funding, while assisting people with multiple sclerosis (MS) to live independent and full lives. Additionally, a brick and mortar facility we will call THE ROCK HOUSE is in the planning stages, and will provide free of charge, multiple programs and opportunities designed to heal the mind, body and spirit of all those whose lives have been affected by MS.

Diamond Dave Doesn't Disappoint

Note: today's article comes to us courtesy of the poster known as Him.

David Lee Roth recently joined Beach Boy Mike Love onstage in Beverly Hills, where Love was honored for his songwriting prowess with the Ella Award by the Society of Singers. Roth is Roth.  More vocalist than singer, more cheesy than a stuffed crust pizza.  He is an acquired taste that you either love or hate. "Meh" isn't a phrase used to describe Diamond Dave.

Thing is, he sounds good here.  Roth was never a great singer live.  Fans who say that have imagined what they heard rather than recalling it.  At his best, he was (and is) an entertainer.  He said what he wanted, acted like he wanted, and drew a huge swath of fans into his fast-talking orbit.  Even solo, and well past the "lion stalking his prey" days, Roth could command a crowd . . . of thousands or hundreds.  Recently, he has given many performances that test even a fan’s love: straining to reach notes he never hit before, scatting instead of talking, and trying to prove he can sing.

Not here. While he mangles some lyrics, chats and moves like he is doing an old vaudeville routine, and still insists on dressing like a woodworking apprentice, Roth nonetheless gives the lie to the idea that he can’t manage vocals live . . . in concentrated doses, at one-off shows, where he can focus on a single song or two. A Different Kind of Truth amazed a lot of fans and haters (and got its fair share of criticism too, for recycling old scraps).  Roth sounded good though.  Studio trickery and all, he sounded like you hoped he would sound.  This video again shows why Roth is a one-of-a-kind sort of artist.  And it makes a fan hope that the new album that Van Halen is working on will be as good as the last, even if we know the live concert vocals won’t live up to the album (or this video).  Thing is, they never did.  The whole is more than the parts.

“Dance the Night Away” and discuss.

Lynch Mob Perform 'Lost Behind the Wall'

"Lost Behind the Wall" is a Dokken classic... and never really performed live. Like, ever. Well, the other day Lynch Mob performed the song... and it was kind of epic. Totally rare. Totally awesome. Totally Glam.
