Happy Valentine's Day, Hair Metal Fans

Are you going out tonight for Valentine's Day? Perhaps you are staying in. Eric and I don't really celebrate these sorts of holidays, so there is nothing special planned in our household.

Perhaps you'd like to have a throwback Valentine's Day, complete with a homemade mixtape (ok, Amazon playlist) of great power ballads for the one you love. Here's some choices for a great power ballads list.

  • Metallica, Nothing Else Matters
  • Aerosmith, Dream On
  • Whitesnake, Is This Love?
  • Extreme, More Than Words
  • Bon Jovi, Always
  • Van Halen, Can't Stop Lovin' You

Sunday's Best: Week 6, 2022

Happy Super Bowl Sunday! It's an unofficial holiday for Americans today and this one is extra sweet for me because the Cincinnati Bengals made it all the way to the big game... for the first time in 33 years. So my entire day revolves around watching football coverage.

Usually, Super Bowl halftime shows are disappointing, but there have been memorable ones as well, especially Prince performing in the rain and of course Michael Jackson's epic gig in 1993. This year, I have high hopes because the show is featuring some of my favorite 90s hip hop artists. This year we get Dr. Dre, Snoop Dogg, Eminem, Mary J. Blige and Kendrick Lamar. I cannot express to you how much Eric loved Snoop Dogg when we were in high school. All in all, I'm hoping for a fun day - a real Sunday's Best. I'm crossing my fingers that the Bengals win and bring the Lombardi trophy home to Cincinnati.

If we don't get this song live tonight, it will be criminal! "Nuthin' But A G Thang"

Just In Case You Hate Love Songs

Valentine's Day is Monday... and on Monday, we'll talk love and power ballads. But today, here's a list of anti-love songs. Bon Jovi is on the list. So is Def Leppard and Nazareth and Judy Garland. Yes, it's a diverse group. The song choices are all pretty great. Do you have a favorite anti-love song?

Farewell Ian McDonald

Ian McDonald - guitarist (and so many other instruments) and co-founder of Foreigner and King Crimson - has died. He was 75 and the cause was apparently cancer. I'm definitely more on the Foreigner side of things. A few Foreigner tracks are simply iconic, including "Cold As Ice."

There's Another Heaviest Riff Video!

The video I posted yesterday was very popular for the creator and he made a new video with 13 more songs.

This time, we've got riffs from Every Mother's Nightmare, RATT, Firehouse, Loudness, KISS, Savatage and more. Probably the best inclusion on this list is "Unchained" by Van Halen. I've always thought that was an absolutely face-melter of a track.

Hair Metal's Heaviest Riff?

This is actually a really damn good list. A guy who posts as The Art of Guitar on Facebook and YouTube created a list of his picks for the heaviest riffs in hair metal. He plays each song, too!

Some of the selections include Whitesnake's "Still of the Night" and Slaughter's "Take Me Away." Of course, Skid Row's "Slave To The Grind" is included. Shotgun Messiah makes an appearance and so does Dokken. Give it a play and let me know what you think.

Good Lord - Now This Feud Is On The Sports Pages

Now Barstool Sports of all sites is covering the Twitter feud between Nikki Sixx and Eddie Vedder. Apparently Vedder hit back at Sixx at a live show recently, mocking Tommy Lee's drum setup. Seems like Barstool is on Nikki's side on this one. Personally, I think Sixx and Vedder called each other up and figured out how to juice this "feud" for more money on each side. We're all the suckers.
