Sunday's Best: Week 27, 2022

There's new David Lee Roth music to celebrate and that's our Sunday's Best for this week! The new track is called "Pointing At The Moon" and the video features artwork from Roth, too. This track is a little different from what Roth usually releases. It's good to hear from him again - but it isn't clear if this is for an upcoming album or just a one-off.

A Great, Lazy Summer Day Song

I've just been lounging around and ignoring the fact that I need to vacuum basically every floor in the house. I started thinking about underrated summer songs and then I realized Aerosmith has a big one! Their track "Girls of Summer" really does hit with that warm weather, party vibe.

"The Girls of Summer" came out in 2002 as a new track to promote O Yeah! Ultimate Aerosmith Hits. My parents gave me the CD for Christmas that year. Eric and I got married in early December of that year, so getting the album was a way to bridge my younger days with my new, full-on adult life. I can't believe the song is 20 years old. Then again, I can't believe I'll be celebrating that many years of marriage soon, too!

Farewell Manny Charlton

Manny Charlton, founding guitarist for Nazareth, has died. Nazareth remains a criminally underrated band and Charlton was an amazing talent. Charlton was 80 and the reworked "Love Hurts" remains one of the greatest early power ballads, period.

"Hair of the Dog" has one of the best choruses for radio, ever. When the part "Now you're messing with a son of a bitch" happens, you must admit you press the accelerator a little harder and zoom on down the road. The track's been in regular rotation on classic rock radio since... forever. The best songs never get old.

This Is A Non-Story - A Faux 'Gotcha' Moment

Look, everyone who follows Motley Crue knows that Vince Neil skips every third word of most songs live. But - he is singing live. He isn't using a vocal track and lip synching. So to make a big spectacle out of the fact that there is a teleprompter for song lyrics on stage is just... silly. As a matter of fact, most big bands I've seen live have teleprompters scattered around the stage - and they have used them for years! Aerosmith uses prompters. So does Guns n' Roses and Bruce Springsteen and Ozzy Osbourne and U2 and Paul McCartney... I mean, this isn't a big deal.

Criticize Vince for other stuff but not this when so many other big-time artists use prompters too. This one reeks of an "Internet Gotcha'" moment.

Def Leppard Performs On CNN For Independence Day

Def Leppard was featured on CNN's live Fourth of July celebration last night. For the program, the Leps did "Pour Some Sugar On Me" and "Rock of Ages." The music played as a backdrop to the New York City fireworks.

Last night was not a stop for The Stadium Tour, so the "live" performance was either from an earlier gig or a special one-off show by the Leps. Considering the logistics of that, I'd say the songs were recorded during an earlier stop of the tour. Regardless, it was fun watching the band on TV.

Journey Releases New Track For Independence Day

There's another new Journey song. It's called "United We Stand" and they released it today - Independence Day in America - for obvious reasons. The song is on the band's upcoming album Freedom.

CNN is airing a concert and fireworks special for the holiday tonight and Journey will perform.
